Mumiy
Troll are superstars in their native Russia, and audiences across North
America will see why when the Vladivostok and Moscow-based foursome,
whose ‘Polar Bear’ EP is out now, kick off their 24 dates North American
tour on August 11 at the Black Cat in Washington, DC. What do they
sound like? That’s apparently in the ear of the listener – the band is
widely praised, but comparisons vary.

· “You don’t
need to be able to read Cyrillic to understand this Russian band — a
fluency in groovy post-punk and edgy guitar rock is all that’s
required.” – The New Yorker

While still only in their twenties, Irish trio Kopek have a history that stretches back a decade.
Drummer Shane Cooney and bassist Brad Kinsella grew up as next-door neighbors in Dublin.
The first singer who answered their ad in a local musician’s magazine turned out to be the golden
voiced Daniel Jordan and from there Kopek was born.   Look for the band to release their US
debut White Collar Lies digitally on June 29 on Religion via SIN/SonyMusic Independent Network.

The Kills – Pale Blue Eyes on Levis Pioneer Sessions

Category: Blog · 0

LEVIS PIONEER SESSIONS

American
Alison “VV” Mosshart and Brit Jamie “Hotel” Hince bridge the Atlantic
Ocean as the Kills, a propulsive duo that reconstructs rock and blues
into a moody and lightning-quick modernized permutation of garage rock.
Mosshart’s background was punk with the band Discount, while Hince
played in a pair of British rock bands. A chance encounter prompted
them to correspond and collaborate across the ocean. The Kills
resulted. The duo announced its arrival in 2002 with the Black Rooster EP, an edgy thing that hinted at the euphoria of the Kills’ live shows. A year later Keep on Your Mean Side
was released. The album lived up to its title, with snaky and
blistering blues-influenced songs. By the time the Kills released Midnight Boom
in 2008 the band’s sound had expanded, with some lighter textures
giving the music a depth and, some claim, greater accessibility.

The dark sounds and spare instrumentation of the Kills has earned
the band no small number of comparisons to the Velvet Underground, the
New York band that pioneered a dark, droning style of avant garde rock.
The VU’s 1967 debut album - The Velvet Underground and Nico
is a rock ‘n’ roll masterpiece and touchstone, featuring jagged guitar
interplay between Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison, menacing viola work
by John Cale and tribal drumming by Mo Tucker. Cale had left the group
by the time it recorded “Pale Blue Eyes” (released in 1969’s The Velvet Underground).
The song represented another side of Reed’s songwriting, delicate and
haunting. As re-crafted by The Kills this beautiful tune starts with a
fuzzy drum that owes much to Tucker’s playing before Hince plays its
lovely and spidery opening melody on guitar. Mosshart’s reading of the
lyrics is fittingly detached until she gets to the titular subject and
her voice cracks with just the right amount of aching.

The Dodos Give Away Free Live Album, Tickets To New Pornographers Dates

Category: Blog, News, On Tour · 0

San Francisco acrobatic-folk troupe The Dodos have charted a busy course for themselves this summer, announcing plans to tour almost non-stop in support of last year’s layered and lacquered LP, Time To Die, while teasing new tunes from their as-yet-untitled Frenchkiss Records follow-up. While their docket is full into the Fall, the band will first join their Great White Northern neighbors The New Pornographers for a June/July run, beginning only a few short days after the band’s appearance at Bonnaroo.

To celebrate the dates – and in the time-honored Dodos’ spirit of sharing – the band is offering up a free live album, The Dodos Live From Akropolis, Prague, on their website. The 10-track, hour-long performance comes as an instant download when fans enter to win tickets to any date on the upcoming tour. Doubly generous, huh?! The recording was put to tape in November 2008, and is available courtesy of Radio 1 Prague, Czech Republic. Quick note: all fans need to do to win tickets is submit their email address, and as the band’s website claims, “the power of the internet will sort [their] location out.”

Finally, the band has slashed prices on their catalog and is offering up an immediate digital download of the Phil Ek-produced Time To Die, its breakthrough predecessor Visiter, along with a 10-track Frenchkiss Records sampler, and a high-quality version of the live recording – all for $14.99.

Psycostick Announce “Pay Off The Van” Tour Dates

Category: Blog, On Tour · 0

Psychostick will hit the road this summer on a headlining tour with info-punk band Look What I Did along for direct support. The band has a simple goal this summer – they want to pay off their van.

“From a business standpoint, it is always best to minimize your expenses. By doing that, it is significantly easier to tour without having a huge amount of money due every month,” says Psychostick drummer Alex Preiss. “Wait…I’m supposed to be a rocker…what I meant to say was:  we just want to party!”

The “Pay Off the Van Tour” will be Look What I Did’s second tour with Psychostick. The bands, along with Powerglove, joined forces in May/June 2008 for the “Terrible Shirt Tour.” The Look What I Did’s February 2010 album, “Atlas Drugged,” was produced by Brian Virtue (Deftones, Chevelle, 30 Seconds to Mars) and released on Modernist Movement Records.

“We’re extremely excited to hit the road with our buddies in Look What I Did again,” says Preiss.  “They just released a new disc and I can’t wait to see them perform some of my new favorite songs. I’m also very stoked to get our van paid off. Hey, if you could tour the country to pay off your vehicle, would you? Of course you would.”

“Psychostick are great friends,” says Look What I Did drummer Jake Omen.  “This tour will make ‘House Party 2′ look like ‘House Party 3.’”

Psychostick just wrapped up the final dates of their nine-week tour with Green Jelly and Nashville Pussy. The band released “The Digital Appetizer,” a three-song collection of new music, earlier this month. Songs “Cockblock” and “Tuff Luv” are available for listening on the bands website.

Rudely Interrupted – Close My Eyes music video

“Diligence is the mother of good luck.”
The
quote above is from Benjamin Franklin and it’s great inspiration for
the Melbourne band Rudely Interrupted. RI are one of Australia’s truly
unique indie rock acts. 5 out of the 6 members share a range of both
physical and intellectual differences but with a sound likened to Joy
Division having a Gary Numan party while eating pitch perfect cookies,
this band will challenge your thoughts and entertain your mind with
their infectious hooks. Read the rest of this entry →

Kae Sun – On The Lookout music video

Category: Blog · 0

01_md-2.jpg03_md.jpg

Born and raised in an artistic and culturally-rich household in Ghana, Kae Sun was exposed to music, story-telling, and performance—ranging from church choir and traditional Ghanaian folk chants to his father’s soul records—at an early age. By the time he moved to Ontario in 2001 to focus on his musical career, Kae Sun was ready to expand his horizons, taking cues from classic musicians like Bob Dylan and Neil Young and branching out from his predominantly hip-hop inspired material to include instruments and melodic vocals in his music. Armed with a new understanding of and outlook on music as a whole, Kae Sun released his first full-length demo, which earned him a 2006 Hamilton Music Award. Inspired by the success of this demo, Kae Sun decided to record an EP entitled Ghost Town Prophecy, and tour Canada in support of the release.
