Thee Oh Sees Announce US Fall Tour Dates

Category: On Tour · 0

The ridiculously prolific Bay Area band Thee Oh Sees are back with another full-length long-player. Warm Slime is guaranteed to please fans of their whacked-out garage /  psych / punk jams.
Recorded by Sacramento sultan of sound Chris Woodhouse, Warm Slime carries on in the same tradition as the group’s previous In The Red release, Help, showcasing their  more electrified and rocking side, in comparison to other recent home-recorded releases. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the mind-bending title track, which clocks in at  nearly 14 minutes and takes up the entirety of the album’s first side. It’s a psychedelic epic of “Inna Gadda Da Vida” proportions! John Dwyer’s guitar playing is at its quadra- spazzed best here, and the vocal interplay with Brigid Dawson gives it an X-crossed-with-the-Troggs vibe. The results are stunning.

The Dodos Give Away Free Live Album, Tickets To New Pornographers Dates

Category: Blog, News, On Tour · 0

San Francisco acrobatic-folk troupe The Dodos have charted a busy course for themselves this summer, announcing plans to tour almost non-stop in support of last year’s layered and lacquered LP, Time To Die, while teasing new tunes from their as-yet-untitled Frenchkiss Records follow-up. While their docket is full into the Fall, the band will first join their Great White Northern neighbors The New Pornographers for a June/July run, beginning only a few short days after the band’s appearance at Bonnaroo.

To celebrate the dates – and in the time-honored Dodos’ spirit of sharing – the band is offering up a free live album, The Dodos Live From Akropolis, Prague, on their website. The 10-track, hour-long performance comes as an instant download when fans enter to win tickets to any date on the upcoming tour. Doubly generous, huh?! The recording was put to tape in November 2008, and is available courtesy of Radio 1 Prague, Czech Republic. Quick note: all fans need to do to win tickets is submit their email address, and as the band’s website claims, “the power of the internet will sort [their] location out.”

Finally, the band has slashed prices on their catalog and is offering up an immediate digital download of the Phil Ek-produced Time To Die, its breakthrough predecessor Visiter, along with a 10-track Frenchkiss Records sampler, and a high-quality version of the live recording – all for $14.99.

RJD2 Tour Dates and Release Date for New Album

Category: Blog, News, On Tour · 0

RJD2 Announces Inversions of The Colossus Due June 22nd

RJD2 took to his blog yesterday to officially announce a forthcoming project – Inversions of the Colossus. The album, which is a follow up to January’s The Colossus is due to hit stores on June 22nd. Read the full letter from RJ below:

hey hey hey folks, so i got a few questions on twitter today along the lines of “what’s this INVERSIONS record all about?”, so let me give you the official briefing on the NEXT release on rj’s electrical connections:

in the past, i have done everything i can to release instrumental versions of records i’ve made that have vocals on them. both Soul Position records, Magnificent City, The Third Hand, In Rare Form-the list goes on-are all records that were intended to be non-vocal versions of their “counterpart albums”, so to speak. this is a holdover from when i was a young sprout of a dj that would fiend for instrumentals on wax, and have tried to keep that tradition alive.

so, what do you do with an album like “The Colossus” that is already half instrumental in the first place? pair it down to the 7 vocal songs, do instrumental versions, and release an instrumental EP? or ditch the whole thing? the answer wasn’t so clear. but, being the studio rat that i am, i realized that i had enough songs that i was happy with to REPLACE those 7 instrumental songs that were originally on “The Colossus”. then, things started to come into focus-release a companion piece to “The Colossus” that encompasses the vocal songs-sans vocals-and 7 new songs(almost all of them being instrumental). but what to call it? it wasn’t a new album, but it wasn’t just instrumental versions of pre-released songs? “inversions Of The Colossus” was the title i arrived at, as it seemed to be the most accurate. so i tied the artwork in to the original version, did a nice clean digipak cd layout as well as double LP, and that is the next release! so on june 22, grab a copy, and enjoy.

Letter posted here.

5. Miike Snow
“Miike Snow”

Swedish + existential & metaphysical lyrics. Gotta have my synths!

4. Fever Ray
“Fever Ray”

Creepy vocals + dense electronica = just like I like it.

3. The Dead Weather
“Horehound”

Electric rock and funky backbeats. No bias here. This album/collaboration is one of the best from this year.

2. The xx

Minimal and sexy. Pretty much how I live, nutshelled.

1. Florence + the Machine
“Lungs”

Gothic vocals + gorgeous instrumentation. Florence (speaking about her music) says: “I want my music to sound like throwing yourself out of a tree, or off a tall building, or as if you’re being sucked down into the ocean and you can’t breathe.”

Natasha Khan always scores big pointage for creativity. And who doesn’t love a creepy chase video?

4.  “When I Grow Up
[dir. Martin de Thurrah]

-Fever Rayfeverray

Karin Dreijer Andersson (The Knife) hardly lacks imagination – a harlequin dancing on a diving board over a dirty pool? She somehow pulls off weird without pretension.

3.Two Weeks
[dir. Patrick Daughters]

-Grizzly Beargrizzlybear

Exploding heads are cool! P. Daughters is unquestionably following in Michel Gondry’s quirky footsteps!

2.  “The Reeling
[dir. Hydra (John Hobbs, Ariel Danziger, Sam Stephens)]

-Passion Pitpassionpit

A bit too “disco” for me at times, but dig that ripped magazine effect.

This video is my #1 because it involves two of my favorite things: New York City and nudity! (It just sounds good, OK?)
