Behind The Covers – Storm Thorgerson on The Beginnings of Hipgnosis

Category: Blog · 0

Interview: Storm Thorgerson

I interviewed Storm at the San Francisco Art Exchange where there is a showing of some of his original works called “Lovers of Covers – The Album Art of Storm Thorgerson”. The entire interview goes about 35 minutes. This is a clip from that interview where he talks about the beginnings of Hipgnosis, the company that did album art for all of the cool records in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and the present.

I’ll be posting several of these types of clips as well as the entire video interview as well so stay tuned.

Thee Oh Sees Announce US Fall Tour Dates

Category: On Tour · 0

The ridiculously prolific Bay Area band Thee Oh Sees are back with another full-length long-player. Warm Slime is guaranteed to please fans of their whacked-out garage /  psych / punk jams.
Recorded by Sacramento sultan of sound Chris Woodhouse, Warm Slime carries on in the same tradition as the group’s previous In The Red release, Help, showcasing their  more electrified and rocking side, in comparison to other recent home-recorded releases. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the mind-bending title track, which clocks in at  nearly 14 minutes and takes up the entirety of the album’s first side. It’s a psychedelic epic of “Inna Gadda Da Vida” proportions! John Dwyer’s guitar playing is at its quadra- spazzed best here, and the vocal interplay with Brigid Dawson gives it an X-crossed-with-the-Troggs vibe. The results are stunning.

Roots Rocker Paul Thorn Releases Free Track “Pimps And Preachers”

Category: Blog, News · 0

As he likes to say, Paul Thorn is “the second most famous musician from Tupelo, Mississippi” (with the first, of course, being Elvis Presley). Thorn’s new ‘Pimps and Preachers’ album, out on Perpetual Obscurity Records June 22, includes many stories about characters in his hometown. He will headline the second night of Tupelo’s annual Elvis Festival June 5th.

Like Presley, Thorn grew up in a Pentecostal church, but Paul’s father was actually the preacher. Thorn’s uncle was a former pimp, and Paul’s relationship with the two of them gave rise to the title track on the new album. Thorn himself was a blue-collar worker before he became a full-time musician, and is a powerful performer who The San Francisco Chronicle calls “Springsteen from Mississippi.” Thorn is also a master storyteller who, on record and on stage, weaves the pimps, preachers and characters of his adventurous life into a compelling series of tales with the directness of Elvis in his ’68 comeback special.

Digital Underground New Release and Free mp3

Category: Blog, News · 0

Hip Hop legends Digital Underground are back for the last time with The Greenlight EP. The EP features never heard before material, remixes and a special live recording of the group’s famed “Same Song” featuring a young Tupac Shakur. The project, the last official release from the group, came out May 18th worldwide.

PURCHASE The Greenlight EP

Many have noted the album’s special place in the Digital Underground catalog as well as its place in hip hop history.  According to Jake Records Founder Scott Thomas, after the group’s last release there were still a few songs hidden away in archives that Shock and the group really wanted out there, so The Greenlight EP was born to help round off the collection for fans and hit a final and tremendous book-note to the influential career that D.U. has had. Thomas adds, “What’s great about this collection of tracks is the diversity of sounds and themes, and the fact that it’s a real upbeat project,”. Shock G comments, “Two of my favorite D.U. tracks exist here, “Duck Season” and “Greenlight” which is the rappin’ debut of Peanut Hakeem shreddin up the song with Money-B.”

Production credits on the album include Shock G, David Banner, Dotrix 4000 and more. The Greenlight EP also features guest vocalists 2Pac, Numskull (of The Luniz), and J Stalin.

Local Natives Tour Dates and Free Download

Category: News, On Tour · 0

Gorilla Manor, which was given Pitchfork’s coveted Best New Music tag earlier this year, hit stores in February via Frenchkiss Records, and is already being hailed as one of 2010’s best records. Since then the band has been keeping busy with appearances at SXSW, Coachella and a huge (and hugely sold out) US tour with up-and-coming labelmates Suckers. Before appearing before one of those sell outs at Bowery Ballroom in New York City last Thursday (NYTimes Review!), the band stopped by Craig Ferguson to make their late night debut with “Airplanes.” A link to the clip is below, along with the band’s full touring itinerary, which includes stops at almost every big-ticket festival of the summer – Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Isle of Wight, Glastonbury, Roskilde, Pitchfork Festival, and about a half dozen others.

What the press is saying about Local Natives:

“Best New Music: True, we tend to bow at novelty and innovation, but Gorilla Manor proves to be a refreshing reminder of the pleasures of synthesis.” – Pitchfork

“It’s a rare band that can use its chemistry as its own instrument. But the young, frightfully accomplished Local Natives are a rare L.A. band indeed.” – Los Angeles Times

“The camaraderie practically oozes out of the music of Local Natives, making Gorilla Manor my surprise album of the year.” –Bob Boilen of NPR

“Local Natives create the kind of feeling – with a musicality so ambitious and daring, but immediately satisfying – that you can only attain if you’re head over heels with the very thought of maximizing all that’s in your heart” – Daytrotter

“Poetic songs, which billow, churn and explode into light.” – NME

Michael Butler vs. Anvil – Hairbangers Ball Interview

Category: Blog · 0

On Saturday Feb 6, 2010 , I interviewed Anvil at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. They’ve been touring pretty much non-stop since the documentary “The Story of Anvil” came out. I brought along Eddie Daroza, who ran the camera for me.
Thanks to super producer Shane Chisholm and Julie Ark for lining up the interview for me.
