Interview: Storm Thorgerson

I interviewed Storm at the San Francisco Art Exchange where there is a showing of some of his original works called “Lovers of Covers – The Album Art of Storm Thorgerson”. The entire interview goes about 35 minutes. This is a clip from that interview where he talks about the beginnings of Hipgnosis, the company that did album art for all of the cool records in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and the present.

Week 3 of our series on The New Wave of British Heavy Metal

This week we have a classic from Def Leppard from 1979

from Wikipedia:

“Wasted” is a 1979 single by British hard rock band Def Leppard from their debut album On Through the Night. This was the band’s first proper single, and the recording featured on the single is a different version from the On Through the Night
LP. The B-Side on the single is “Hello America”, which is also a
different recording from the LP. These alternate, single-only versions
of “Wasted” and “Hello America” have never been released on CD, except
for on bootlegs. The record was produced by Nick Tauber, whom the band
selected because of his previous clients, particularly Thin Lizzy. Two other songs, Rock Brigade and Glad I’m Alive,
were recorded during the session but were shelved when the band’s
management were displeased with the production, thus resulting in
Wasted and Hello America being released as a single. Tauber’s versions
of Rock Brigade and Glad I’m Alive remain unreleased.

The Love Me Nots – Do What You Do music video

With a 60′s farfisa organ and plenty of fuzz
pedals, The Love Me Nots formed in 2006. Influenced by  The Animals,
The Ventures, The Sonics, The Dead Kennedys, The Seeds, The Detroit
Cobras, April March and The White Stripes, The Love Me Nots dubbed
their sound “spy-surf-fuzz-gogo.”

In Black & White (2006
Atomic A Go Go) was recorded by Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Romantics)
and within one week of its release went to the CMJ Top 100 chart.  The
single ‘Move In Tight’ was included on SPIN’s list of “Songs You Need
to Download Now,” a panel of editors from Billboard selected them to
perform at the 2007 Independent Music World Series showcase in San
Francisco, XM Radio named the debut it of the Top XMU 25 Albums of
2007, and Stinkweeds Records in Phoenix called it one of their Top 10
best-selling albums of the year.

The Love Me Not’s second
album, DETROIT (2008 Atomic A Go Go), also  recorded by Diamond, was
named Disc of The Month by Rolling Stone (France), was named one of the
Top 10 Albums of 2008 by critics from The Village Voice, Austin
Chronicle, Phoenix New Times, BreakThru Radio, and more. The single
“Give Em What They Want” was included on Little Steven’s comp The
Coolest Songs In The World, and the single “Break My Heart” was
featured on the television show Rescue Me. Tracks were played on BBC
Radio, Alice Cooper’s syndicated show, KUPD, KROQ, XM Radio (Featured
Artist), KEXP, WFMU, and many other stations in the US and abroad.

In
the fall of 2008, the Project Infinity label (LA)released DETROIT on
vinyl and the band released a music video for the single “You’re Really
Something.”

In the Spring of 2009, the band toured Europe for
the first time, leading to the re-release of their first two records on
France’s Bad Reputation Records.

The Love Me Nots released their third album , Upsidedown Insideout (2009 Atomic A Go Go) on September 18, 2009.

After that, we have The Dollyrots in studio for a fantastic acoustic set that includes 2 new songs, so I guess that qualifies as an exclusive. They were really nice people and play some of the catchiest punk rock you will ever hear. They came down while they were in San Francisco during a west coast tour. They also did an interview with Jackie and Martina while they were here. That will be posted on MeVIO soon.
