Few bands can be credited with creating a legacy,
however, legendary New York based extreme metal outfit SUFFOCATION have
done just that. For 20 years now SUFFOCATION have been creating music
that has become the very standard by which we judge all things extreme.
Their fusion of technicality, groove and sheer unrelenting brutality
has been imitated but never quite duplicated. Milestone records such as
Effigy of the Forgotten, Pierced from Within, and Despise the Sun have
influenced a wealth of today’s best musical talents. And now, with the
release of SUFFOCATION’s Nuclear Blast debut Blood Oath, their legacy
of unrelenting and unique heaviness continues for perhaps the genres
greatest band!

Formed in 1989, SUFFOCATION released their three-song
demo, Re-incremation. Within weeks of its release came the interest of
many record labels that wanted to claim stake to the first SUFFOCATION
full-length album.

The band chose to release their follow-up, an EP
entitled Human Waste, through Relapse Records in 1991. Human Waste saw
SUFFOCATION bash out the beginnings of extreme metal’s most visible
style, the New York combination of blasting grind-cord beats and
metallic textures. But this was only the beginning.

In 1991, the now classic Effigy of the Forgotten
(inducted recently into Decibel Magazine’s “Hall of Fame”) was released
by Roadrunner Records. Effigy… brought SUFFOCATION and death metal to a
new echelon, taking the multiple languages of music and unifying them
in an evocative, thundering chorus of extreme metal.

In 1993, the band released their second full-length
album, Breeding the Spawn, on Roadrunner Records. Breeding the Spawn
surpassed expectations. This highly rhythmic album built on the legacy
of their previous releases.

Following the release of 1995’s Pierced From Within on
Roadrunner Records, SUFFOCATION embarked on massive tours of Europe,
Canada, Mexico and the United States, playing to tens of thousands of
fans.

In 1998, they released the EP Despise the Sun on Vulture
Records and disbanded soon after. Extreme metal fans wept at the loss
of one the genres greatest champions and pioneers. Eventually the EP
was re-released in September 2000 and properly distributed by Relapse
Records.

In 2003, SUFFOCATION reformed after a much needed break
and in April 2004, Relapse Records released Souls to Deny. The groups
return was a truly devastating display of technical extreme metal. Over
400 shows and countless United States and European tours later
(including the Wacken Festival in Germany, playing to over 33,000
fans), SUFFOCATION entered the studio to record the most mature and
destructive album of their now legendary career. Suffocation, their
2006 self-titled release, again proved why they have solidly held their
position as one of the most important and influential bands in the
genre.

In 2008, the band signed a world-wide deal with Nuclear
Blast Records and began working on material for their label debut. By
2009, SUFFOCATION had entered Full Force Studios once again with Joe
Cincotta (Internal Bleeding, Criminal Element), who the band had worked
with to record their two previous efforts. Zack Ohren (All Shall
Perish, Decrepit Birth) was enlisted this time around for his mixing
and mastering capabilities to capture the band’s ever-elusive live
sound and intensity. The collaboration between all the parties involved
has resulted in what is without a doubt their finest production to
date! Add in the artwork and sick visualization of the Blood Oath
concept by cult artist Jon Zig (Gorgasm, Deeds of Flesh) and you have
the bands most complete all-around release yet.

Forged in the blood sweat in tears of its members,
SUFFOCATION’s oath to uphold their uncompromising sound remains intact.
In this era that accepts quality extreme acts more than ever, 2009 will
see SUFFOCATION explode from the underground into the mainstream. All
hail the reigning kings of brutality!

Diamond
Head’s history is certainly among the most peculiar in all of rock. One
of the most remarkable talents to arise out of the New Wave of British
Heavy Metal, the band’s career never fulfilled its early promise, yet
their legacy still ranks among the most influential of the genre.
Sounds metal editor Geoff Barton (the man who coined the phrase
N.W.O.B.H.M. in the first place) once remarked that “there are more
good riffs in your average single Diamond Head song than there are in
the first four Black Sabbath albums”; and Iron Maiden leader Steve Harris weighed in that Diamond Head “looked like they were going to be the next Led Zeppelin
for a while.” Such lavish praise had been sparked by the band’s
unassuming, independently recorded first album, which by all rights
should have been just the first step on the road to a legendary career.
But this was not to be…here’s the story why.

Diamond Head formed in Stourbridge, England, in 1976 by schoolmates Brian Tatler (guitar) and Duncan Scott (drums). They soon recruited Sean Harris (vocals) and a few months later, Colin Kimberley
(bass) joined their ranks. Barely out of school and vehemently opposed
to joining the cover band pub circuit, the fledgling young band also
had the heyday of punk rock to contend with and were forced to develop
their sound in relative seclusion through endless rehearsal and
songwriting sessions. Still unable to attract any record company
attention three years later, despite occasional gigs in and around the
English Midlands, the group decided to take matters into their own
hands, issuing a couple of self-financed singles, “Shoot out the
Lights” and “Sweet and Innocent.” These were soon followed by a
self-produced full-length album, which they recorded between February
and April 1980 and made available via mail order through their own
Happy Face Records. By naïve inexperience or artful design, the LP was
packaged in a conspicuously anonymous white sleeve, lacking so much as
song titles, and sent to members of the British music press. As it
turned out, a copy of the nameless LP (later commonly referred to as
the “White Album” or “Lightning to the Nations”, after its first song)
soon found its way into the hands of Sounds metal editor Barton, who
was so floored by its contents he quickly proceeded to interview the
band for the respected music weekly. Soon being heralded by most
everyone in-the-know as an undeniable masterpiece, the album quickly
passed into legend as one of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal’s most
seminal documents. Indeed, between Tatler‘s towering power chords and Harris‘ delicate yet muscular voice, Diamond Head had stumbled upon the perfect synthesis of un-godly, Sabbath-sized riffing and Zeppelin‘s epic musicality.

If only the rest of the story was as remarkable. Encouraged by such a
euphoric response, Diamond Head quickly signed with MCA, issued the Four Cuts
EP, then set out on a relentless touring schedule that included a
legendary appearance at the 1982 Reading Festival. But the dream began
to shatter as soon as they entered the studio to begin recording a
follow-up album. MCA’s and producer Mike Hedges‘ excessive tampering and the band’s inability to just say “no” transformed Borrowed Time into a disappointing, vague reminder of their glorious first album (the fact that Sean Harris‘
mum acted as their manager didn’t help matters any). For their part, as
brilliant as they were at composing complex heavy metal anthems, Tatler and Harris
proved incapable (or subconsciously unwilling) to pen radio-friendly
singles. Re-recorded versions of first album standouts “Am I Evil?” and
“Lightning to the Nations” also paled in comparison to the genuine
article, and though it entered the British charts at a very respectable
number 24, Borrowed Time
quickly fulfilled the prophecy in its title and tumbled from sight. As
initial expectations gave way to disappointment and pressure began to
mount, the band started work on their third album. But they would
splinter in half during the sessions for 1983′s erratic Canterbury, with the rhythm section of Kimberley and Scott
both fired and/or quitting. Another commercial failure, the LP’s
chances were further curtailed by a pressing error that resulted in
20,000 faulty copies. A slot in that year’s massive Castle Donington
Monsters of Rock Festival couldn’t staunch the bleeding, and a frazzled
Tatler (by now standing on the brink of a nervous breakdown) finally pulled the plug. Diamond Head effectively ceased to exist.

Here’s where things get interesting, however, for among the band’s early worshipers was a young Danish drummer named Lars Ulrich,
who had been so deeply affected by Diamond Head’s early material that
he proceeded to pattern his own brand new group (future metal gods Metallica) on their idiosyncratic style. Not only did Metallica
base the bulk of their early live set on Diamond Head’s songs, they
also covered the first album’s “Am I Evil?” for the B-side to their
“Creeping Death” single in 1984, and later repeated the gesture with
“Helpless” in 1987. This unexpected exposure began to slowly resurrect
Diamond Head’s music among fans, and when Tatler and Ulrich finished compiling a greatest-hits disc, released later that year as Behold the Beginning, unsuspecting American audiences were also, finally given their first glimpse of Diamond Head. But, Tatler remained wary of attempting a complete comeback and it wasn’t until 1993 that he again teamed up with Harris, bassist Pete Vuckovic, and drummer Karl Wilcox for a set of club dates under the name Dead Reckoning. The full-fledged reunion was made official by a new album, entitled Death & Progress (featuring guest performances and songwriting contributions from Black Sabbath‘s Tony Iommi and Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine),
which nevertheless failed to ignite serious interest in the band.
Following a number of high-profile concert appearances in the U.K. that
summer, Diamond Head once again disbanded, but not before releasing the
Evil Live album, recorded at their Milton Keyes performance where they supported Metallica, ironically enough.

A slew of unsatisfactory greatest-hits sets has been released in the
years since, but it wasn’t until 2001 that fans were finally treated to
a fully restored re-issue of Diamond Head’s legendary debut by
Sanctuary/Castle. Their desire to promote the long-lost classic led to
another reunion, which included Diamond Head’s first-ever performance
on U.S. soil at the New Jersey Metal Fest on April 5, 2002.

On Saturday Feb 6, 2010 , I interviewed Anvil at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. They’ve been touring pretty much non-stop since the documentary “The Story of Anvil” came out. I brought along Eddie Daroza, who ran the camera for me.
Thanks to super producer Shane Chisholm and Julie Ark for lining up the interview for me.
About Anvil:

Bio
If you were to look up the word “perseverance” in the almighty handbook
of heavy metal, there may very well be a photo of Canadian metalists,
Anvil. Since their 1981 debut, Hard N’ Heavy, the group – which was
co-founded by singer/guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb
Reiner – has been listed by many as one of the creators of the
thrash/speed metal genre (especially on such Chris Tsangarides-produced
classics as 1982’s Metal on Metal and 1983’s Forged in Fire). But due
to subsequent bad record deals, bad management, and just plain bad
luck, Anvil appeared to take a back seat to a new wave of metal bands –
most of which listed the group as a prime influence. However, Anvil has
never stopped rocking, and with the arrival of the
critically-acclaimed/surprise hit film, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil”
(directed by Sacha Gervasi), the group is back where they belong – at
the forefront of heavy metal.

“It’s quite amazing, really,” admits Lips. “It’s the prime example
of what it means to be a rock n’ roller, go out there, and try to make
it. And believe me, most of the scene is guys like me. It’s very seldom
and rare that anybody makes it – to what people mean by ‘making it’.”
Reiner seconds the sentiment – “The movie has gone beyond my
expectations. It’s been mind-blowing – to see what’s come from the
movie and how much it actually has helped the band.” When asked what
their favorite scene was, both agree on the unveiling of a certain
painting of Reiner’s (that resides down a stairway in his home – you’ll
have to see the movie for more info!). As far as a scene from the film
that is hard to watch, Reiner says, “There’s nothing hard looking back
at it,” while Lips feels differently: “My least favorite part is when
they show me naked!”

And although there are certainly some zany Spinal Tap-like parallels
between Anvil and David St. Hubbins and company, Anvil has always been
taken seriously by metalheads, including some very well known ones, who
praise the band in the film. “Anvil was one of those bands that just
put on this really amazing live performance,” said Velvet
Revolver/ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, while Motorhead
singer/bassist Lemmy added, “They were a great band – I always liked
Anvil,” and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich gushed, “These guys were
going to turn the music world upside down.”

Having issued a total of seventeen releases between 1981 and 2004,
the group, that also includes bassist Glenn Five, reconnected with
Tsangarides (Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest) for their thirteenth studio
album, eighteenth release overall, This is Thirteen. The
turbulent-yet-triumphant sessions were well-documented in the “Anvil!”
film. “It differs in one vast sense – the production,” explains Reiner.
“‘This is Thirteen’ was produced by Chris Tsangarides, who produced
‘Metal on Metal’ and ‘Forged in Fire’ – probably the most famous,
classic Anvil albums. With Chris, we created that classic Anvil magic
sound – that previous records were lacking. The last four or five
albums, material-wise, were all similar. We had been trying to find the
direction back to the classic Anvil style and sound – it’s just the
production hadn’t been up to scratch. Chris was a big missing part on
our past albums.”

As evidenced by such vintage Anvil-sounding ragers as “Feed the
Greed,” “American Refugee,” and the title track, This is Thirteen is
certainly the strongest Anvil release in a long time. Originally put
out by the band themselves and sold through their website, the album is
now seeing proper national distribution via CD (with “Thumb Hang” added
as a bonus track) as well as a double gate-fold vinyl version
(including two additional bonus tracks) through VH1 Classic Records.
Additionally, due to the film’s success, Anvil received an invite from
AC/DC to open mammoth football stadium shows for the legendary Aussie
rockers on their “Black Ice” tour, while a book about the group’s
career (which shares the same name as the movie) appeared as well. Add
to it a DVD release of the movie in Fall 2009, and a new studio album
that is already written and just needs to be recorded (titled
Juggernaut of Justice), and it certainly appears as though Anvil is
making the most out of their “second life.” And as Lips adds, the
group’s rapid-fire workpace will not slow down, despite all the
newfound success. “Working. More recording. More gigs. More – more than
ever!”

Tommy Lee is out for several shows on the current Crue Fest tour because of burns to his hand. Lee was playing with some sparklers and ended up burning his left hand.

For the last five shows that started on August 14th, Morgan Rose of Sevendust was filling in for Lee. For the next three shows starting on August 21st, Lee will be replaced by Frank Zummo of Street Drum Corp.

Lee for his part is still trying to stay involved. He is coming on stage at the shows to explain to the crowd why he isn’t playing. He interacts during several songs, and does still play piano on “Home Sweet Home.”

In a posting to MySpace, Nikki Sixx wrote the following:

“…accidents do happen and, yes, frustration does happen to everybody, including Tommy, who would rather play drums (even with a damaged hand) than just about anything in the whole world. But following doctor’s orders for a few shows is what we have to (do) right now (or cancel shows). We all wanna say we’re sorry Tommy has to sit out a couple shows, but we hope to have him back up on the drums ASAP.”

As of right now, there is no scheduled time for when Lee will return to the drum kit.

Recently, Alice Cooper talked with Billboard about the new treats he has in store for fans during his new tour. The tour, called the “Theater of Death” tour, will feature a look back at Alice’s long career.

The concept for this tour was created by Robert Jess Roth, an Alice fan and the director of the Disney stage production of “Beauty and the Beast.” He wanted the lyrics to tell four stories, and at the end of each “act”, that version of Alice would be killed, and the next one brought in.

The tour will run until some time in December, and Alice plans to film the show at some point before the end. He also plans to take this show out again next year. Alice is also working on music for his next album.

If you are an Alice fan, this might be something that you don’t want to miss.
