BIO:

The Joe Perry Project was essentially Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry’s solo project, which Perry started working on shortly before his departure from Aerosmith in 1979. Perry signed a record deal almost immediately after his exit from the band with Aerosmith’s label, Columbia Records, who were disappointed with the chaos in the Aerosmith camp and hoping to maneuver Perry back into Aerosmith.
The original band line-up consisted of Perry, singer Ralph Morman, bassist David Hull and drummer Ronnie Stewart. This line-up recorded The Project’s 1980 debut album, Let the Music Do the Talking, which was produced by long-time Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas. The album was fairly well received and sold a respectable 250,000 copies in the US.
During the tour in support of the album, Morman was fired and replaced by Joey Mala, who lasted until the end of the tour, when he in turn was replaced by singer and rhythm guitarist Charlie Farren. This line-up recorded one album, I’ve Got the Rock’n’Rolls Again, which was released to little attention in 1981. Columbia’s reluctance to promote the album combined with Perry’s continuing drug problems led to Perry’s firing the entire band in 1982.
Equipped with a new record label (MCA Records) and three new band members in singer Cowboy Mach Bell, bassist Danny Hargrove and drummer Joe Pet, the band released Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker in 1983. The album met the same fate as its predecessor, selling a meager 40,000 copies without any promotion whatsoever. Despite the poor sales, The Project went out on a final tour in support of the album, adding then ex-Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford to the line-up. The following year, both Perry and Whitford would rejoin Aerosmith for a very successful reunion, at which point The Project had been disbanded.
A compilation album, The Best of the Joe Perry Project, was released by an Australian Indie Record label in 1999.

Have Guitar … Will Travel,” a nod to the similarly titled 1959 Bo Diddley album, was named by a fan, Joe Piscitelli, after Perry asked for submissions via Twitter. Five of the tracks are sung by a relatively unknown German musician called Hagen. He was discovered by Perry’s wife, Billie, on YouTube. The remaining song on the disc is an instrumental. The first single is “Long Way to Go.” Other cuts include a cover of the early Fleetwood Mac tune “Somebody’s Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked In Tonite)” as well as the new song “Oh Lord,” which Perry sings.

“That’s kinda like a Jim Morrison-y prayer set to music,” Perry told Reuters in a recent interview. ”My son sings in the choir at school, and I had him bring in some of his friends and they came in and sang the choruses and things and helped with the vibe. That’s the kinda thing I really don’t hear in an Aerosmith record.”

Joe’s last self titled solo CD sold 31,000 copies and was nominated for a Grammy.

Filling in for TOM will be David Hull, a longtime friend of the band who played in the Joe Perry Project and who sat in for TOM on various shows in 2006. When STEVEN TYLER, JOE PERRY, AND JOEY KRAMER return to the road on July 15 at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta, GA, they’ll be welcoming back BRAD WHITFORD, who has recovered from a recent surgery after having sat out the opening dates of the tour.

This tour is cursed. I can’t help but think the band is done. Bring on the Joe Perry Project!

Steven Tyler

Guitarist Brad Whitford has had to sit out the tour following surgery after hitting his head getting out of his Ferrari. (?!!)- Editors note: WTF? Getting out of his Ferrari?
Brad is scheduled to return to the band’s tour on July 7 if Tyler is better.
Fans have said Tyler appeared to pull a leg muscle at the band’s last show, on Monday. Tyler has been troubled by his feet: In May 2008, he checked into rehab saying he needed “a safe environment to recuperate” following a series of painful foot surgeries. In 2006, the band was forced to cancel the remaining dates on a tour so that Tyler could undergo throat surgery.
Come on Steven! Do the shows anyway!
I saw Nazareth perform when Dan McCafferty was injured. He played the entire show seated and it was fantastic. I would not mind seeing Tyler performing in a chair either.

The feedback is important in the early stages of a tour, such as the one that began last Wednesday in St. Louis, as the band struggles to regain match form after a 20-month absence from the stage.

“They don’t hold anything back,” Perry said of the comments on sites such as the official Web site, aeroforceone.com. “It’s a lot of fun to read it. Some of it isn’t so much fun, but it still gives you good feedback… We can take care of the technical stuff and what we expect out of ourselves, but the most important thing is how it affects the fans.”

The band has been playing one album from top to bottom on this tour. For the first two weeks it will be 1976′s “Toys In The Attic“. So far the only song not played from that album is “You See Me Crying” (my favorite song on the record). Joe Perry says that this one is too difficult for Steven Tyler to sing so soon on the tour, at least until his throat gets into shape. There are rumors that they will be playing “Rocks” in its entirety soon on the tour.

But what Perry really wants to do is exhume is the unloved 1979 album “Night in the Ruts,” recorded during the band’s lengthy, drug-fueled nadir. Perry plays on only some of the tracks because he left the band before the album was released.

“I think there are probably two songs on there that we could play pretty much right off the bat,” he said. “The rest of them we’d have to sit down and really take them apart, relearn all the guitar parts. There are some rockin’ songs on there and it would be fun to play them live.”

So far on the tour Perry takes to the microphone for the “Rocks” cut “Combination,” and he envisages adding other solo outings such as “Bright Light Fight” (from 1979′s “Draw the Line“) and “Walk on Down” (from 1993′s “Get a Grip“).

In the meantime, he started mixing a new solo album on Sunday, and hopes to premiere some new music during the summer ahead of an official release in September or October. The nine-track disc was recorded during a frantic 40-day burst of activity after sessions for Aerosmith’s long-delayed album were postponed when Tyler came down with pneumonia.

The album, with the working title of “Freedom,” will be credited to the Joe Perry Project, a combo he formed during his five-year hiatus from Aerosmith.

Perry does some vocals, and also brought in a singer in the bluesy Paul Rodgers mold, whom he declined to identify. One of the tracks Perry sings is called “Oh Lord,” which he likened to a Jim Morrison-style prayer set to music. Some high-school choristers, including his son Roman, are featured on the tune.

“That’s the kind of thing I really don’t hear on an Aerosmith record,” Perry said.

Blind faith and ceaseless optimism are the reasons I have gone for an Aerosmith album. Had the question been, “which will be the far more satisfying experience?” then of course the Joe Perry Project album would win, but I live in hope that after going into rehearsals to practice Rocks/Toys (depending on which reports you read) that the conversation went something like:

Steven: “Eeeeawwooo, zipabadidooo, doooo doooo doooo daaa doooow”
Joe: “Cool guys, we really used to rock, why don’t we do that again?”
Steven: “Yaaakkkkaaaaa yyyyyyyyaaahhhhhh yayayayayayaya”
Brad: “True, all this messing about with outside songwriters sucks, we haven’t written anything even close to being as cool as Back In The Saddle in 20 years….. lets get back to rockin’”
Joey: “Has anyone seen my vitamins?”
