According to his press release:

Between The Concrete & Clouds is a record full of firsts for Devine, both sonically and technically.  Perhaps best known for his solo acoustic musings, this is the first record he’s made that is fully backed by a band.  After settling back home in Brooklyn after being on tour for most of 2009 and ’10, Devine spent time in his rehearsal space playing around with ideas on his own, bringing shape to the songs by recording them as acoustic demos, something he hasn’t done since high school.
Produced by longtime collaborator Chris Bracco and mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Dr. Dog), Between the Concrete & Clouds was recorded in 10 days over a span of a month.  The 10 track album features musicians Brian Bonz (keyboard), Chris Bracco (bass, keyboard), Mike Fadem (drums, percussion), Russell Smith (electric guitar), and Mike Strandberg (guitar, mandolin).  This is the first recording Devine’s done with his version of this band, and it had an inspired impact on the final product.
“The combination of Chris and Rob on this record kind of marries the best aspects of everything I’ve tried to do over the past ten years,” said Kevin.  “I tried to explore a bit musically and make an album that still has a lot to chew on, but serves it with a scoop of ice cream,” said Kevin.  “I took the lyrical density of what I typically write – which are not-simple stories about not-simple people, or what I feel life is most accurately like – but give them more of a traditional pop structure.”
Devine has received numerous accolades from press and fans alike over the span of his nine year career.  His discography includes several EPs and live albums, as well as past full-lengths Circle Gets the Square (2002), Make the Clocks Move (2003), Split The Country, Split The Street (2005), Put Your Ghost to Rest (2006), Brother’s Blood (2009), and Bad Books (2010), a side project Kevin worked on with Andy Hull and other members of Manchester Orchestra.  Kevin has played with top artists including Bright Eyes, Manchester Orchestra, Okkervill River, Earlimart, and many more, and has performed at the following festivals: Coachella 2010, Bonnaroo 2010, Bamboozle 2010, Lollapalooza 2009, Austin City Limits 2007, and Soundwave 2008 (Australia).

The band continues their Top 10 success worldwide as they debuted at #7 on the overall chart in Canada (their highest chart position to date there) and scored their first Top 10 chart positions in the UK at #6 on the Independent Albums and #5 on the Rock and Metal charts, respectively.

Twin Shadow Premiere “I Can’t Wait” Single

Category: Free Music, New Releases · 0

George Lewis Jr. AKA Twin Shadow has offered his latest single “I Can’t Wait” for a free download.

The troubled son of a hairdresser and a “teacher who lived many lives” (semi-pro football, massage therapy, film maker and other things we’ll tell you about when you’re older), George was born in the Dominican Republic and spent his formative years in Florida. Not in a happening spot like Miami, though. Try an island that happened to be the winter home base of the Ringling Brothers’ Circus and palm tree-flanked old people.

If you think that’s strange? You don’t know the half of it. And neither does George, although he’s trying to remember; trying to piece the sepia-toned scenes together along with a debut album that’s all about letting go. Or is it? Like an art-house double feature that leaves you wondering what the hell just happened in the best way possible, Forget tells a spellbinding story without spelling everything out.

Forget isn’t tethered to any trends or specific genre, either. Instead, it seems almost to be hovering above the landscape of decades gone past; checking in at rest stops with it’s wheels pointed directly toward the future. So don’t be surprised to hear things abruptly shift from synth-swept soundscapes (“I Can’t Wait,” “Castles In the Snow”) to glimmers of gossamer dance music (“For Now,” “Shooting Holes At the Moon”) or full-on power balladry (“Slow”).

And who is that sitting next to George’s director’s chair?  Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear in the role of producer, working closely with Twin Shadow, fine-tuning Forget’s special effects while maintaining the memory-wracked mood that George spent months perfecting in his Brooklyn apartment. Brooklyn based label Terrible Records will be taking Twin Shadow’s Forget on as their very first LP release.

“It’s bedroom recorded music, but it’s been done with the same attention as many classic B-movies,” he says. “It’s not like a slapdash home video, though; it’s someone operating with very little at 100-percent of their ability.”

In other words, Forget is like The Seventh Seal filtered through the drive-in feel of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Meaning: lots of tight shots, careful lighting, and a lingering sense that something’s not quite right—a film adaptation of George’s life that’s essentially a 40-minute waking dream.

Joemca Premieres Single “Big Dreams”

Category: Blog, Free Music · 0

mp3: Download Joemca “Big Dreams”

Purchase 16 Devils

Here’s a line you don’t hear very often: “The puppet world blows my mind.”

We’re not talking about the next generation of Jim Hensons here, either. We’re referring to Joemca’s ongoing relationship with Inkfish, an experimental puppetry troupe that explores the human condition like John Cusack’s string-pulling character in Being John Malkovich. And by exploring the human condition, we mean everything from a “fantasy of Einstein taking back the [atom] bomb” (The Brain) to a moody meditation on war-torn wives (Three Good Wives), with Joemca’s rich, tightly-woven soundscapes scampering across every last scene.

Kinda like how the L.A. native/New York transplant spent the last year coloring outside the lines of his long-awaited debut LP, 16 Devils. Despite having roots that reach as far back as 2006, the album feels like one seamless collection of love songs that are a little off, a little more real than one verse/chorus, verse/chorus exercise after another. Which makes sense when you think about it. After all, Joemca’s self-titled EP was co-produced by Yoko Ono’s longtime collaborator, Rob Stevens, earning a stack of press clippings for its “tastefully morbid tales of hummable melodrama” (Spin) and “words [that] are as heady as the music itself” (All Music Guide). Or as The Village Voice put it, “Hearing [Joemca] is like taking a walk through a scattered mind, yet it all somehow makes sense.”

“My puppet show stuff is a lot more abstract and atmospheric,” explains Joemca, “but my solo songs are more like Sam Cooke—deceptively simple.”

That’s immediately clear if you listen closely, as “Big Dreams” raises the curtain with crushed beats and groove-locked hooks. Elsewhere, “Tip Toe” is haunted by phantasmagoric harmonies; “Sleeping Pattern” is pelted by laser-like synths and clouded keys; and “Control Yourself” is cut with restless rhythms that are a few BPMs away from being a drum ’n’ bass single. So while Joemca insists he’s been influenced by Al Green as of late, his background in classical composition (Mozart, Chopin) and cutting-edge electronic music (Oval, Plaid) also seeps into 16 Devils’ shape-shifting songs. That, and Joemca’s days of studying film in college.

“I was more interested in being an auteur than anything else,” he says, “so I’d write and direct all my own movies. No one would understand any of it, but they made perfect sense to me.”

Joemca’s records are much more universal—the perfect balance between artiness and accessibility. And he’s not about to stop making them, either. Another set of songs is already in its early stages, although Joemca insists, “If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. I like when things aren’t spelled out for anyone, you know?”

Cloud Cult Light Chasers Release Date

Category: Blog, News · 0

Pre-Order Light Chasers

On September 14th, 2010 Cloud Cult will be releasing Light Chasers on Earthology Records.  Their eighth studio album in the last 15 years (not including Lost Songs from Lost Years), this latest full-length is their most epic and reflects a band that has explored all that life has to offer ranging from lost love to death to sorrow to healing to birth.  The first song released from the new album was “Running With the Wolves,” which came out digitally in April as part of a special Earth Day EP and instantly found fans at The Current in Minneapolis and KEXP.

Light Chasers – is the band’s first new full-length studio album since Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes) (April 2008).  Since 1995, Cloud Cult has been quietly crafting sprawling, cathartic albums.  Founder Craig Minowa wrote, recorded and released the first Cloud Cult album The Shade Project in 1995 using the closet of his small Minneapolis apartment as his recording studio.  Over the next 15 years Cloud Cult released Who Killed Puck (2000),  They Live on the Sun (2003), Aurora Borealis (2004), Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus (2005), The Meaning of 8 (2007), and Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-partying Through Tornadoes) (2008).  In addition, they released a documentary DVD No One Said It Would Be Easy on April 21st, 2009 and at the end of 2009 the band released a double-disc reissue of They Live on the Sun and Aurora Borealis as well as a limited re-release of Lost Songs from the Lost Years (2002).

Now with their new album Light Chasers done and set for release on September 14th, the band will be doing a handful of dates with a full US tour scheduled for this fall.

“Diligence is the mother of good luck.”
The
quote above is from Benjamin Franklin and it’s great inspiration for
the Melbourne band Rudely Interrupted. RI are one of Australia’s truly
unique indie rock acts. 5 out of the 6 members share a range of both
physical and intellectual differences but with a sound likened to Joy
Division having a Gary Numan party while eating pitch perfect cookies,
this band will challenge your thoughts and entertain your mind with
their infectious hooks. Read the rest of this entry →
