Boots Electric Interview

Category: Interviews · 0

Eddie has an interview with Boots Electric (a.k.a. Jesse Hughes) during a recent stop in San Francisco on this episode of The Rad Report.

Boots Electric is a man of many names. Born Jesse Everett Hughes in Greenville, South Carolina, his mom moved to Palm Desert, California when he was 7 years old. It was there that he met Josh Homme (his eventual bandmate in Eagles of Death Metal) and the two became fast friends. Homme gave Hughes the nickname “The Devil” after watching him enact a rather devious revenge on someone who had picked on him. In addition to “The Devil,” “J. Devil” and “Boots” he’s also sometimes known as “Fabulous Weapon.”

Whatever his alter ego at the moment, he’s been making some incredible music. The debut album under the Boots Electric moniker is called Honkey Kong, and it was co-written by Money Mark, longtime Beastie Boys collaborator. Touring extensively for the album’s release, Hughes said that the stop in San Francisco (where he once lived, working at GAP) was “like returning to a home.”

The album has a little bit of something for everybody, even for lovers.

I believe in romance. My heroes are my grandmother and grandfather, because when they were 78 and 82, they would still have these moments when I’d catch them alone sweet talking each other.

As an added bonus, Hughes gets to put romance to the test every night on tour, since his girlfriend Tuesday Cross plays bass in the band.

Duff McKagen Interview

Category: Interviews · 0

Adam Curry has an exclusive and extensive interview with legendary Rocker, ESPN.com columnist and now author Duff McKagan on this edition of the Big App Show.

McKagen is likely best known for his bands Guns N’ Roses, Neurotic Outsiders and Velvet Revolver. He has since begun a second career as a writer, penning columns for Seattle Weekly.com, Playboy.com and ESPN.com. His most recent project is a book about his life called It’s So Easy and Other Lies which came out on October 4th. It chronicles the ascent to fame, crash and burn, and rising from the ashes of a man once nicknamed “The King of Beers” to a life of sobriety and deeper meaning.

In It’s So Easy, Duff recounts GN’R’s unlikely trajectory to a string of multiplatinum albums, sold-out stadium concerts, and global acclaim. But that kind of glory can take its toll, and it did—ultimately—on Duff, as well as on the band itself. As GN’R began to splinter, Duff felt that he himself was done, too. But his near death as a direct result of alcoholism proved to be his watershed, the turning point that led to his unique path to sobriety and the unexpected choices he has made for himself since. In a voice that is as honest as it is indelibly his own, Duff—one of rock’s smartest and most articulate personalities—takes readers on his harrowing journey through the dark heart of one of the most notorious bands in rock-and-roll history and out the other side.

-Editorial Review of “It’s So Easy and Other Lies”

In this extensive interview, Duff and Adam chat about the book, Duff’s writing process, high life in the 1980s and how time (and the contemplation of life) truly can heal.

Alex and Matt from The Arctic Monkeys chat with Pete Mar at the 2011 Outside Lands Festival on this episode of B-Sides.

The Arctic Monkeys began in 2002 in their native Sheffield, South Yorkshire in England. One of their early hits was Fake Tales Of San Francisco, but this year was their first time playing at Golden Gate Park. Pete asked if there was anything resembling it back home.

After gaining prominence in the UK, the band has played festivals all over the world, including Lollapalooza, Leeds and Reading. What’s their most memorable? “Glastonbury is hard to beat.”

Their fourth studio album, Suck It And See, was released this June to mostly positive reviews for its hard rocking, vintage style. They’ve been touring throughout the U.S., Canada, the UK and Europe ever since.

Here are the album’s tracks.

  • She’s Thunderstorms
  • Black Treacle
  • Brick by Brick
  • The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala
  • Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair
  • Library Pictures
  • All My Own Stunts
  • Reckless Serenade
  • Piledriver Waltz
  • Love Is a Laserquest
  • Suck It and See
  • That’s Where You’re Wrong

We Came As Romans Interview

Category: Interviews, On Tour · 0

MeVIO’s Warped Tour coverage continues with Martina and Jackie’s interview with Joshua Moore of We Came As Romans on Emo Girl TV.

Hailing from Troy, Michigan, We Came As Romans began playing together in 2005, and have since recorded two EPs and two full-length albums, the latest of which (Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be) is expected to be released in September. The band is often noted for their joyous, positive vibe.

The girls asked Joshua how he’s enjoying the Warped Tour so far. “It’s awesome, but it’s really hot, all the time.” Moore says that his favorite date on the tour so far was in Pamona. “We had a really good set time and there was a ton of kids.”

So, how did the band get their name?

We were a super-local band, playing these terrible hall shows about twice a month. We were, like, sixteen and seventeen, playing to 20 kids. A couple of our members came up with the name and that was it. At that time I never imagined that I’d be sitting on a couch at the Warped Tour being asked how we came up with the name.

What other bands has Moore enjoyed seeing on the Warped Tour? “I grew up listening to Reliant K. So I saw them on stage the other day and they were awesome.” He also says that he’s friends with members in a lot of the other bands on the tour, and it’s great to see them getting recognition.

Moore also says that he’s excited about the impending release of the new album, and the opportunity to play the new songs live. “We already released the first track, Misunderstanding, and also the title track, and we’re playing both of them on tour. It’s awesome to be playing new music again after playing the same songs for the past two years.”

Jackie and Martina interview Tarcy, Austin and Joe of Artist vs. Poet on Emo Girl TV.

Originally conceived by Tarcy Thomason as an acoustic project, the group quickly morphed into a full-on band.

The group was formed in late 2007, and has since been named by Alternative Press named as one of “The 100 Bands You Need To Know.”

Artist vs. Poet has released three EPs – Alive Once Again (2007), Artist vs. Poet (2008) and Damn Rough Night (2009).
