Bite Size Diaries: Coachella Edition

Category: Festivals · 0

Jennifer Jules Hart has some fun at Coachella on this edition of Bite Size Diaries.

Jules was really excited upon arrival at Coachella. She heard all kinds of bands, and met people from all over the world. She managed to capture some of the festivities on her camera phone, after losing her main camera. Which brings us to tip #1: Always get a locker. “Trust me guys, it gets wild,” says Jules. “Get a locker. Also, watch out for those Ruffie Coladas.”

Since there are huge crowds of strangers from all over, Jules also recommends that you be on the lookout for love (or something like it). Maybe consider going stag. “Don’t bring sand to the beach!”

She also suggests that you wear a costume. “The more fun your costume, the more fun you’ll be having.” If you need a demonstration of that, watch the video. Makes perfect sense to us.

Nice tie, dude.

Be sure to check back for more from Bite Size Diaries. One host. One Camera. One event.

Hologram Brings 2pac Back To Life

It was a ground-breaking moment Sunday night in Indio, California as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg performed a high-tech resurrection. Tupac Shakur, who was shot and killed in 1996, appeared on stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to perform “Hail Mary” and then joined with Snoop on “2 of Amerika’z Most Wanted.” The life-like hologram prompted dramatic reactions from those in attendance, including many of the other performers present. Even watching the video is an eerie experience. It’s become an immediate sensation online today.

The Death Row reunion was the highlight of the festival so far, and will likely be considered one of the unforgettable moments in the history of Hip Hop. By its very nature, the performance had to be choreographed down to the minutest detail, yet it seemed loose and spontaneous and – for lack of a better word – real. The interaction between the Tupac hologram and Snoop onstage was particularly spooky, and the hologram’s moves were uncannily authentic, Crip walk and all.

The final moment saw Tupac disappearing into a burst of light, a feat that many said gave them chills and drove them to tears. Roots’ drummer Questo tweeted the following. ”That Pac Hologram haunted me in my sleep. Rest In Peace 2pac…….#OkIWill!!!!!!!!!!”

Snoop and Dre’s set also included a heart-tugging tribute to Nate Dogg who passed away last year, and featured in-the-flesh guests Eminem, Warren G, Kurupt, Wiz Khalifa and others.

The festival continues next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Deadmau5 and Madonna Kiss And Make Up

MDNA says “I don’t support drug use.”

So you’re in your 50s, still trying to be hip and maintain an illusion of relevance. You snag a cool gig introducing Avici at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. What do you do to win over the crowd? Ask them if they’re high on MDMA!

As you can watch in our video, Madonna incited Electronic Dance Music fans at the festival by asking ”How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?”

EDM star Deadmau5 would have none of it, though, laying into the Material One online in a diatribe that ended with ”You’re a role model to 100′s of millions. You have a powerful voice, EDM could use your positive influence, not ‘molly’ talk.”

Madonna responded with an ultra-cutesy photo tweet saying “From one mouse to another. I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called ‘Have You Seen Molly’ written by my friend Cedric Gervais.” You can see the image below.

Deadmau5 responded saying that was fair enough, but added “just be a little more aware of what you should represent at EDM events.”

Whether Madonna was referring to the drug, or the song that refers to the drug, isn’t that sort of parsing hairs? Also, her new album is MDNA? Yeah, the similarity to MDMA is only coincidental, we’re sure.

Was Deadmau5 out of line for calling her out? Was Madonna intentionally pandering to folks taking ecstasy, or was the reference unintentional? Does any of this matter?

Tom Morello SXSW 2012

Category: Festivals, Videos · 0

He’s a hard-working politically astute half Kenyan Harvard grad from Illinois, and his name isn’t Obama. One of the world’s greatest living guitarists, Tom Morello is also one of the most notable activists for justice and peace on the planet. In addition to his work with Rage Against The Machine and Autoslave, Morello has also devoted much of his time to a Folk Music career under the alias “The Nightwatchman.”

Morello took the stage at Rolling Stone’s Rock Room day party in Austin on Saturday, delivering an hour-long tour-de-force of modern protest songs. The full video is available for viewing online at Rolling Stone. MC5′s Wayne Kramer joins him for part of the set.

Morello’s SXSW showcase the night before was busted up by cops when he took the music outside to a “people’s stage” set up in coordination with Occupy Austin.

We’ve got more from the CMJ 2011 with some pictures of Brite Futures playing The Trash Bar in Brooklyn on Friday, October 21st.

Brite Futures began in Seattle in 2005, calling themselves “Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head” (a reference to the actress’ appearance in the film “V for Vendetta”). In July of 2005, they changed the name to reflect their growing maturity, and because of Ms. Portman’s reported disdain for the name.

Here’s the current band lineup.

Shaun Libman – vocals, maracas, shakers, tambourine, claps
Luke Smith – vocals, guitar, keyboard, drum programming, claps
David Price – keyboard, guitar, vocals, claps
Claire England – bass keyboard, vocals, claps

Their current album “Dark Past” is available as a digital download, a CD or a purple vinyl pressing.
