Special guest interviewer DP Hovan chats with Clown (a.k.a. Shawn Crahan) from Slipknot at the Rockstar Mayhem Festival on this episode of The Hairbanger’s Ball.
DP started out by confessing that he’s a drummer, but simply cannot play Slipknot songs because of their complexity. Crahan had high praise for Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison. “Joey has been playing every day since he was eight, and that’s all he did, every day, and still does. He’s in the top one percent. Probably my favorite drummer in the world.”
The Mayhem Fest this year features Slipknot, Motorhead, Anthrax, Slayer and more. With that stellar lineup, DP wondered how setlists are chosen. “We do it collectively as a band,” says Crahan. “It’s pretty much written for the fans. We try to think about what they want.”
Asked to name a few of his unlikely musical influences, Crahan had no trouble rattling off an eclectic and surprising list. “Bee Gees are one of the best bands ever. I love King Crimson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson. Good songs are good songs.”
At 42 years of age, and the father of four, Crahan is just now beginning to share his life in the band with his kids for the first time. “Two boys, two girls. Best of both worlds time two. As I get older it gets easier to have them around. I kept them away for obvious reasons. They didn’t need to be imprinted by certain things that would be out of my control.”
If you’re interested in the festival, there’s still time to check out a handful of shows on the East Coast leg.
