Adele, Ed Sheeran, Clean Up at Brit Awards

Adele, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay were among the winners last night at the 2012 Brit Awards, the biggest event in the British music industry’s annual calendar.

Adele won for Best British Female Solo Artist and Album of the Year. Sheeran won Best British Male Artist and Breakthrough Act, while Coldplay took the honors (or perhaps we should spell it “honours”) for Best British Group. More than 6.2 million Britons tuned in to watch the awards program, making it the most watched show of the evening and the highest rated for the Brit Awards since 2005.

It’s been a very good February for Adele, who also won big at last week’s Grammy Awards here in the U.S., taking home six statues, the most ever won in a single night by a female artist (a distinction she shares with Beyonce).

Adele is no stranger to the Brit Awards podium either, having won the Critics Choice Award in 2008, an honor that went to Emeli Sandé, Maverick Sabre and Michael Kiwanuka this year.

Brit Awards also went to One Direction for Single of the Year (“What Makes You Beautiful”), to Foo Fighters, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Lana Del Ray in International Categories, to Ethan Johns as Producer of the Year, and a special award to Blur for Outstanding Contributions to Music. You can see the full list of award winners and the nominees for each category on the official Brit Awards site.
