Interview with The Sounds

Category: New Releases, On Tour · 0

The Rad Report interviews The Sounds’ multi-instrumentalist Jesper Anderberg during their recent stop in San Francisco. He talks about, among other things, their new album Something To Die For which was released on March 29th.

Formed in Helsingborg, Sweden in 1999, The Sounds’ style has been compared to bands like Blondie, The Cars and Missing Persons. They describe their own music as “Post-Punk Revival,” “Dance Punk” and “New Wave” along with the catch all “Indie Rock.”

Band Members:

  • Maja Ivarsson – Vocals
  • Felix Rodriguez- Guitar
  • Johan Bengtsson – Bass
  • Jesper Anderberg – Keyboards, Piano, Guitar
  • Fredrik Nilsson – Drums

The new album Something To Die For features the following tracks.

  • It’s So Easy
  • Dance With The Devil
  • The No No Song
  • Better Off Dead
  • Diana
  • Something To Die For
  • Yeah Yeah Yeah
  • Won’t Let Them Tear Us Apart
  • The Best Of Me
  • Wish You Were Here

So far, two singles have been released from the album, Better Off Dead and the title track. The band has used innovative methods to market their music, including shows on MySpace and fan cover version song competitions.

If you’ve never heard of The Sounds, you may still have heard them. Their song Hurt You was used in a Geiko commercial back in 2003. You’ve probably also seen photos of the stunning Ms. Ivarsson, who has been named one of the “Hottest Women of Rock” by Blender magazine.

So, what does The Rad Report think of The Sounds on stage? “Fun like only Swedish new wave indie rockers can do.”

“This was my favorite time ever in the studio, I wrote most of the songs on the spot and recorded all of them in one incredible session lasting 5 days and nights!,”  explains Dave Stewart.  I made an unusual film of the process that not only features all the musicians and performers but also gives away some of my writing secrets which involves both a well known fortune teller and hypnotist who allowed themselves to be filmed in session with me.”

Dave Stewart’s The Blackbird Diaries is unlike anything he has embarked on during his illustrious 30 year music career both with Eurythmics and as a solo artist. With an American flare and rooted in rock, country, and blues, the album is in the vein of recent releases by Bob Dylan and Neil Young – masterful recordings mixed with rich and detailed lyrics.  The Blackbird Diaries showcases a very different type of songwriting for Stewart with more story-driven autobiographical lyrics, which is a departure from the pop/rock sounds which have made him one of the most successful and revered songwriters/collaborators of all time. Tales of loves conquered and loves lost, Dave gets intimate, personal with words while he allows his music to rock free on an album that might just prove to be this artist’s second, and perhaps finest, act.

A multi-media entrepreneur, Dave Stewart is recognized as one of the most respected and accomplished talents in the entertainment industry today.  His career spans more than 30 years and more than 100 million album sales, plus a Lifetime Achievement Award with Eurythmics partner Annie Lennox. With Lennox, Stewart delivered ingenious pop/rock hits such as “Here Comes The Rain Again,” “Would I Lie To You,” “Missionary Man,” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”.  One of the most sought-after writers and music producers, Dave has crafted songs for and collaborated with the likes of Mick Jagger, Bono, Tom Petty, and Gwen Stefani (to name a few) and has shared the stage with everybody from BB King, U2, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. Stewart has won Best British Producer four times and Best British Songwriter five times, as well as numerous Grammy, MTV, and European awards.  A highly-regarded artist and filmmaker, Stewart has scored and penned the title songs for many hit movies throughout the years, including the Mick Jagger collaboration for the film Alfie, which won the pair a Golden Globe. He produced the award-winning documentary Deep Blues, and his feature directorial debut Honestpremiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. Stewart and songwriter/producer Glen Ballard recently wrote a musical adaptation of the 1990 Jerry Zucker film Ghost, which opens in London’s West End in June this year. This Year Stewart also co-wrote and co-produced Joss Stone’s new album as well as Stevie Nicks’ new album “In Your Dreams” which marks the first occasion Nicks has ever collaborated on a solo album.

“We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Dave.  He is a legend who has been associated with all kinds of quality music for years and the Blackbird Diaries is an amazing accomplishment.  We will hunt and kill for him, adds Cliff Chenfeld, Co-Owner Razor & Tie.
Dave Stewart is the latest addition to join the leading independent label Razor & Tie and the diverse and acclaimed roster that includes such artists as Foreigner, Vanessa Carlton, Richard Ashcroft, Nicole Atkins, Angelique Kidjo, Dave Barnes, All That Remains, Norma Jean, Dweezil Zappa, Dar Williams, Chelsea Grin and The Summer Set.  The New York City-based label is one of the fastest growing independent record companies in the United States, and has garnered both Platinum sales and Grammy awards in its 20-year history.

The Gallery – Ballroom of Broken Hearts music video

Category: Blog · 0

The Gallery’s hook-laden rock songs combine a mix of mainstream
appeal and professionalism with indie cred and likeability. Their brand
of guitar-driven, southern-infused pop rock blurs the lines between
authenticity and commerciality, producing songs that are refined and
disarmingly catchy. A subtly biting guitar sound, simple, road-worn
lyricism and consistently sharp musicianship transform their tracks into
instantly memorable pop gems you don’t want out of your head.

The foursome, Brendan Cooney (lead vocals/guitar), Ryan Cooney (drums),
Dave Mozdzanowski (bass/bg vocals) and Shea Brennan (lead guitar) have
maintained their hometown fan base in New England, while building a
similar following in Southern Florida, where they resided for three
years. In 2009, the band set out on the road for their first national
tour – a full 50 dates across 25 different states. Since then, they’ve
expanded their fan base across the country, playing shows from Florida
to Washington and California to Massachusetts. In the past six months
alone, the band has performed with such well-known acts as Rooney, The
Maine and We the Kings. The Gallery takes pride in sharing their music
and passion with fans at live shows. It’s not hard to see or hear why.

Beneath The Gallery’s mainstream veneer is an unexpected lyrical
maturity that transcends the group’s young age. They explore the spaces
between growing up and following dreams, and between falling in and out
of love, writing songs that are both meaningful and instantly relatable.
This fall, the band recorded five new songs with producer Warren Huart
(The Fray, Augustana, Hot Hot Heat) at Swing House Studios in Hollywood.
From the catchy hooks of “Catalyst” to the thought-provoking lyrics of
“Who’s in the Right” and the haunting melodies of “Ballroom of Broken
Hearts,” the new tracks reveal a band expanding and sharpening its
sound. Keep an eye out for tour dates this spring, and an exciting year
in 2011.

THE GALLERY HAS SHARED THE STAGE WITH:
The Maine (Warner Bros)
We the Kings (S-Curve)
Rooney (ILG)
Jonas Sees in Color (Glassnote)
VersaEmerge (Fueled By Ramen)
J.Cole (Roc Nation)
Automatic Loveletter (Epic)
The Young Veins (One Haven)
Thieves and Villains (Victory)
Black Gold (Red Bull Records)
Last November (Southern Tracks)
Fight Fair (Triple Crown)
Ivoryline (Tooth & Nail)
Showbread (Tooth & Nail)
Poema (Tooth & Nail)
Swimming With Dolphins (Tooth & Nail)

PRESS:
“Who: Riffed-out rockers originally from tiny Wilbraham, Massachusetts.
Sound: Big, shout-along choruses and bluesy guitar breakdowns. Singer
Brendan Cooney grew up on Nineties rock, but gravitated toward legends
like Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.” – Rolling Stone
“They simply write great pop songs with an indie college flair. Looks like O.A.R. finally has competition.” – Kings of A&R
“The Gallery may be from Massachusetts, but their music definitely has a
sweet, Southern flavor. Their latest EP, Come Alive, is a near-flawless
showcase of pop rock with an americana twist.” – The Album Project
“Come Alive is a stripped-down rock anthem with a folkish twist. The
guitars are simple and unfiltered; the drums and bass are organic and
unprocessed; the vocals are melodic and tranquil. The songs themselves
are a breath of fresh air, infused with a nostalgic sense of raw emotion
that is a tribute to early ’60s and ’70s rock. Keeping with the theme
of uninhabitability, frontman Brendan Cooney’s subtle southern twang is
as memorable as it is unique and his lyrics carry a sense of optimistic
honesty rarely found in contemporary music.” – Stereo Subversion
“They put on an engaging show with fantastic melodies and catchy lyrics.” – ASU State Press
“LOTS of potential, keep an eye on these guys.” – We Bring the Hits
“They have created their own unique sound that blends the in-your-face
catchiness of mainstream choruses with quirky, intricate rhythms and an
undeniable charisma that will have you swaying and swooning in no time.”
– For the Sound
“Bordering on a folk-rock-esque style these guys bring a new light to the rock game.” – OurStage
“The Gallery must take their band name very seriously because each song
on their debut album If You Know What I Mean acts as intimate portrait.
Listening to each song is like taking a stroll at an art exhibit, with
each masterpiece revealing more about the artist, making The Gallery a
fitting band name.” – PopWreckoning

Wyman Rejoins Rolling Stones for Tribute

Category: News · 0

Share Ross reports on a reunion of sorts for The Rolling Stones and their long time bassist Bill Wyman on the latest episode of Rock’n'Roll TV.

Wyman joined the band to record a track for a tribute album being put together by Ben Waters called “Boogie 4 Stu” in honor of original band member Ian Stewart. Stewart died of a heart attack in 1985, and proceeds from the album will benefit the British Heart Foundation.

Wyman, along with current Stones members Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, recorded a cover version of Bob Dylan’s “Watching the River Flow” for the album, which is scheduled to be released on April 19th. The album will also feature songs from PJ Harvey and Jools Holland, as well as some other contributions from Wood, Watts and Richards.

Bill Wyman retired from the band in 1992 after the Steel Wheels and Urban Jungle tours, amidst speculation that there was tension brought on by the publication of his biography Stone Alone. Since that time, Darryl Jones has joined the Stones on bass both in the studio and on tour, although he is considered a “hired hand” and not a full member of the band.

Wyman continues to tour with his own band, The Rhythm Kings, and continues his work as an author and internationally acclaimed photographer at the age of 74.

Drive A – “Let’s Have A Wreck (Trainwreck)” music video

Category: New Releases · 0

Music video from Drive A – “Let’s Have a Wreck (Trainwreck)”

Sometimes a chance meeting is more than it seems – in the case of Drive A, a random moment ignited a fuse resulting in a incendiary new band. Songs about rebellion, crunchy guitars and killer hooks have their foundation in old school punk and rock n’ roll that the band reveres but their stage presence and delivery is fresh and in the now.  With a fan following that is expanding exponentially, it’s clear that the band is onto something. Drive A come roaring into 2011 with their brand new album, The World in Shambles, out on Dead Conflict Records on April 12th, available on iTunes now.

The World in Shambles is the follow up to their debut album Loss of Desire (2009). The critically acclaimed album which featured singles “Are You Blind” and “Can’t Sleep It Off” set the precedent for Drive A’s form of high energy rock n’ roll and provided the soundtrack for their energetic live show.  Frontman Bruno Mascolo explains “although we’re still proud of Loss of Desire, we feel we’ve come along way as musicians and songwriters, you can hear that we’ve played about 200 shows since our last record.” The band freely admits that their singular mission upon entering the studio was to craft an album that bottled their firecracker live energy and onstage prowess. They collectively rejected polished, computerized techniques and technologies in favor of beautiful, genuine imperfections, all of which serve to make The World in Shambles that much more authentic.

On The World in Shambles the band wanted to shake up their comfort zone, so instead of working with longtime friend Dennis Hill (producer of Drive A’s 2009 debut Loss of Desire) the band recorded the album in two parts. The first session was recorded on analog equipment to tape at 1974 Studios in Silver Lake with Dave Cobb and the second session took place at Sunset Sound with Julian Raymond. Despite the band’s “Fuck You” attitude towards concepts like conformity and fitting in with a “scene,” Mascolo mentions that a current of positive energy courses through the album’s veins. “There is a positive message at the end of every song,” he admitted. “The idea of singing about a negative subject can sometimes be therapeutic, but most of the time it becomes cliché and loses the original meaning.”  “Revolt!” is about Mascolo’s travels abroad, specifically in Europe, last summer. “It seemed more like a community over there,” the singer mused. “There is a real lack of community here, people are just so about themselves, but it’s not like that overseas.”

The title track “Let’s Have a Wreck (Trainwreck)” is another personal song that lays its cards face up on the table. Mascolo revealed that the song is about “having an addiction to destroying situations or relationships,” a construct that all of Drive A’s fans are able to connect with. It’s also the first video clip from the album; directed by Shane Drake (Paramore, PATD, FOB, Twighlight music videos, etc)

Chuck D Teams up With Eclectic Method

Category: Free Music, New Releases, News · 0

Two members of London trio Eclectic Method Moved to the states and released their debut single Outta Sight on March 15h.  and it just so happens to be a stunner featuring Chuck D. Not prone to resting on their laurels, or resting at all for that matter, two days after the release they arrived at SXSW and gave us all a healthy dose, kicking off the Vimeo/Nikon party with Diplo, rocking the PepsiMax show with Pharaoh Monch, not to mention opening for their personal heroes Wu-Tang Clan. And they didn’t stop there. On March 29 they made their national TV debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as members of The Copyright Criminals All Star Band (EM, Clyde Stubblefield, Chuck D, ?uest Love, and Black Thought). Copyright Criminals’ redux of “Fight the Power” signaled a defining moment in TV history featuring three generations of sampling icons, from the source to the innovators: Stubblefield (the most sampled drummer ever), Chuck D (the visionary who helped bring sampling to the masses), and of course EM, whose genre-bending cut-ups continue to transform the future landscape of the art form. But perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
