New Album KILLING TIME, Available Everywhere Now! http://bit.ly/fkMg3O

Biography: “Spent all my life/Waiting for a moment to come” – “Killing Time”

Bayside
lead singer/rhythm guitarist and founding member Anthony Raneri has
been waiting 10 years—since he formed the rock group in Queens, N.Y. in
the winter of 2000—to make an album like Killing Time, which represents a
number of firsts for the band named after his hometown.

The
album is the band’s debut for new label Wind-up Records after four
releases on Chicago-based indie Victory Records, including Sirens and
Condolences (2004), Bayside (2005), The Walking Wounded (2007) and
Shudder (2008), steadily growing their following through tireless
touring. Recording their latest at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, N.Y.,
and Water Music in Hoboken, N.J., with renowned producer Gil Norton
[Foo Fighters, Counting Crows, Pixies, Jimmy Eat World], Bayside finally
had the time and resources to fulfill their creative vision.

The
group turns Raneri’s acoustic songs into full-blown, deceptively
complex rock epics that touch on bitter endings (like that of his
marriage on the first single, “Sick, Sick, Sick,” and the angry,
full-throttle rocker “The Wrong Way”), fresh starts (“The New Flesh”),
band camaraderie (“It’s Not a Bad Little War,” “Sinking and Swimming on
Long Island”) and even a hopeful ballad, complete with a 20-piece
orchestra and a horn section (“On Love, On Life”).

“This is a new
chapter, a new beginning for us,” acknowledges guitarist Jack O’Shea,
who joined the band in 2003 and has played on all five of their albums.
“This feels like our debut release. Gil really encouraged us to push the
boundaries of what we do, and not to become timid. Having that kind of
encouragement from someone so accomplished really gave us the confidence
to be more creative.”

One can hear that in O’Shea’s various
guitar sounds, from the Dick Dale/Link Wray surf guitar rumble which
opens “Already Gone,” to the gnarled, twisted solos in “Sick Sick, Sick”
and “It’s Not a Bad Little War,” to the pneumatic rush of “Sinking and
Swimming on Long Island” or the frenetic jam that ends “The Wrong Way.”

“We
wanted to make a big, detailed record, but still retain the pop
sensibility that makes us who we are,” states Raneri about the studio
process. “Gil helped us stay on an aggressive rock track without losing
sight of the music’s commercial appeal, its ability to get on the radio.
To achieve that balance was the plan.”

For Bayside, the rest of
its career leading to this moment feels like Killing Time, according to
Raneri. “We had the time, the producer, the label to support it and fans
who are ready to hear it. Everything was in place for us to make our
masterpiece.”

Indeed, Killing Time takes everything Bayside has
learned in its decade in the music business and puts it on display for
all to hear. On “Mona Lisa,” another song Raneri wrote about his ex
(“Someday, I’ll forgive you/But it still hasn’t happened yet”), he tried
an experiment in writing. “I half-jokingly call it my greatest
accomplishment,” he laughs. “It was an attempt to write a song with as
many chromatic key changes in it as possible, without it sounding like
mathematics. I was sure it would never make the album, but everyone
seemed to love it.”

There are also glimpses of the hard road
Bayside has traveled to this point in “It’s Not a Bad Little War,” a
song about being on the front lines and trenches with your bandmates
(“We are the only friends we ever had”), and “Sinking and Swimming on
Long Island,” about all the ones that got left behind (“The harder you
work/The harder you fall/You wake up one day/With nothing at all”).

“Seeing
Sound” has an operatic, almost Queen-like vibe, reflecting Raneri’s own
love of Broadway show tunes, while the dramatic “On Love, On Life,” is
driven by piano and acoustic guitar, with pop tunesmiths Bacharach and
David and Welsh crooner Tom Jones as the touchstones. The title track
shows off the band’s metal chops, with ominous Blue Oyster Cult
overtones.

“I really think this album has the best elements of
all our previous releases,” says O’Shea, whose own guitar heroes include
metal speedsters like Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Megadeth’s Dave
Mustaine as well as Slash, along with such jazz-rock muss as Steve Vai,
Joe Satriani, Allan Holdsworth, Al DiMelola and John McLaughlin. “It’s
the most representative of what we’ve always gone for as a band. It
encompasses what our fans like best about us.”

With 10 songs
weighing in at 38 minutes, there is no filler on Killing Time, an album,
while not a concept, with songs that are organically connected and of a
piece, like Green Day’s American Idiot or Nirvana’s Nevermind.

“We
were trying to make the perfect album,” says Anthony. “We’ve been
trying to make this record for 10 years. We finally had all the elements
we needed to do it. We wanted these to be the 10 best songs we’ve ever
written.”

“Now I don’t ask for much/But this could define a lifetime” – “It’s Not a Bad Little War”

“Everything
has been leading up until right now,” says Anthony. “Killing Time is
about new beginnings, changes. This is our moment, the album we were
supposed to make. A lot of bands that came up with us, we’ve watched
form, get signed, get huge and then disappear. And we’re still
here…People continue to listen and care. We’re living the dream.”

On Killing Time, that dream becomes reality.

“We’re
all just excited about the possibilities of what the next year holds
for us,” concludes Jack. “We’ve always approached our career with a
cautious optimism. We hope for the best, but we’re OK with whatever
happens. We roll with the punches…but this time it all seems so much
more tangible.”

Los Angeles DJs Justin Warfield and Adam “Adam 12″ Bravin formed the moody, Joy Division-inspired She Wants Revenge
in 2003. A fortuitous combination of word of mouth, industry
connections, and airplay on Sirius Satellite Radio and West Coast
airwave giant KCRW provided the duo with enough exposure to snag a
record deal with Geffen, resulting in a 2006 self-titled release that
has drawn comparisons to Interpol, early Depeche Mode, and the Bravery, as well as their aforementioned eternally depressed post-punk heroes from England. After touring with Depeche Mode, they returned with 2007′s This Is Forever.

Japan’s Kids Need Our Help

Category: News · 0

Unless you’ve been living in a cave somewhere with peanut butter stuffed in your ears (and no Net access) for the past two weeks, you likely know that Japan was struck by twin disasters of biblical proportion: a massive earthquake, followed by a massive tsunami. More than ten-thousand people have been confirmed dead, and nearly 20,000 are still missing. The destruction is like nothing we’ve seen in decades.

As the people of Japan struggle to cope with the aftermath of the devastation, folks around the world are reaching out to help. There are many organizations that are working to provide assistance both with the immediate physical needs and with longer term issues.

Here at MeVIO Music, we’re especially concerned about the kids. In a disaster such as this one, the youngest victims are also among the most vulnerable. That’s why we’re asking our viewers to join us in making a donation to the Japan relief efforts of UNICEF.

UNICEF has been helping kids around the world since 1946, providing emergency aid in times of crisis, and also working to support the long-term well being of children and their families. No other organization is as well-equipped to respond in a situation such as this.

Japan, as a relatively wealthy industrialized nation, has been a huge donor to UNICEF over many decades. In the wake of the disaster though, it’s become obvious that they now need our help.

You can make a secure, tax-deductible donation online by following this link to UNICEF USA’s Japan Tsunami and Earthquake page. 100% of your donation will go to help kids in Japan with immediate physical needs as well as longer term issues as they return to school next month. If you’d rather donate by phone, the toll-free number is 1-800-FORKIDS (1-800-367-5437).

You can find out more about UNICEF’s Japan relief efforts on their Website.

Let’s rock this thing.

SXSW Was A Riot

Category: News · 0

Michael Butler reports that the South By Southwest Festival was a real riot this year, or at least it was host to one. Violence erupted Saturday evening when fans who couldn’t get in to an unannounced Death From Above 1979 show decided to crash the venue. DFA79 is noted for their raw hardcore sound, created with synthesizers, bass and drums.

As the Canadian duo began playing their first live performance in several years, people who were barred admittance to The Beauty Bar began to pull down fences in an attempt to gain entry. The crowd became rowdier from then on, with the band actually pausing at one point and asking people to chill.

Security was unable to handle the situation, so the Austin Police were called, and when they arrived on horseback the crowd got even further out of control, hurling objects at the mounts. The entire situation escalated to the point where police used mace and tasers to quell the riot.

This was the closing weekend of the annual festival which was held in Austin from March 11th through the 20th this year.

This isn’t the first time fans at the SXSW Festival have gotten a little out of hand. On March 15th of 2008 a mosh pit on the Lemar pedestrian bridge became so violent that people were jumping into the river to escape harm. Police were called to the scene but were unable to do much but watch the situation unfold.

As Michael says “Good times at South By Southwest!”

Top 5 Irish Drinking Songs

Category: Top 5 · 0

Tomorrow we may all feel like we’ve been dragged through the streets of Limerick behind a draught horse, but tonight we’re drinking. And likely, singing.

Choose your karaoke wisely, me boyos. Here are our picks for the top 5 Irish drinking songs.

Whiskey In The Jar – The Dubliners

The Dubliners were one of the “new” crop of Irish Folk groups to come along in the 1960s. If you’ve only heard Thin Lizzy’s version of the song, you owe it to yourself to check out the recording that first brought this traditional Irish tune to the world.

Stick To The Crather – Robbie O’Connell

The stuff, the drop, the crather. Many’s the name for the Irish elixir of life. Pretty much all of them are in this song.

Beer, Beer, Beer – The Clancy Brothers

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem brought traditional Irish music to the U.S. Folk scene in a big way. The song is called “Beer, Beer, Beer.” Need we say more?

When Irish Eyes Are Smilin’ – Bing Crosby

Hey, at least it’s not “O Danny Boy” and at least it’s not an Irish tenor.

Almost Anything by Flogging Molly

You have to be really, really, drinking to truly appreciate Flogging Molly. No time like the present, right? We’d be hard pressed to pick just one song of theirs to recommend, and hard pressed to get any of the titles  of the best ones past our blushing censors here at MeVIO Music. Okay, we don’t really have censors, let alone blushing ones, but we do try to keep things “brand safe.” Aye?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day (and turn it up – even Bing).

Oedipus Behind the Scenes in The Studio

Category: Blog · 0

Oedipus

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Oedipus is an alternative/progressive rock power trio who has been topping the Polish Modern Rock charts for over seven months and counting. Their hit singles, “Tres Las” and “Burn It Down”, released as a digital singles in the States back in June 2010, will have you dancing your way into 2011. With reminiscence of the rock-like melodies of Muse and 311, this is something you don’t want to miss out on. As ScenePointBlank.com describes them, “a three piece making more noise then a three piece rightly should, [Oedipus] manage the type of grandiose, over-sexed, balls out, guitar rock that are both melodic and epic”. To purchase “Tres Las”, “Burn It Down”, or their previous records, please visit: http://bit.ly/gDolVA.

Oedipus consists of Jeremy Haffner, bass and lead vocals, Stephen Cohen, guitar and vocals, and Keith Larsen, drums and vocals. At the age of thirteen, while studying the Oedipus trilogy in middle school Latin class, these three musicians began using the name exclusively. As Haffner stated in a recent interview with ASCAP, “The symbolism, and relative shock value definitely had something to do with the choice. Also, it’s a great sounding word”.

Oedipus has recently launched a specialty radio campaign with US radio promoters UNCLE and has seen both singles “Tres Las” and “Burn It Down” added to regular rotation on Los Angeles tastemaker Indie 103.1, KROQ’s Locals Only program, KUSF in San Francisco, and KMFA Tucson. The band has also secured many licensing opportunities from their previous records, 2005’s Humbility and their 2008 EP, Covetous. They have had placement in Lion Gate Films’ 2010 release Circle of Pain, major motion picture The Contractor, as well as the Showtime series Masters of Horror.

Just returning from a one off Polish performance sponsored by Eska Rock, Poland’s equivalent to Clear Channel, for their annual Rocktoberfest Birthday bash, the band spent 5 days doing press for their self-titled full-length Polish debut release, the station even launched a Youtube fan generated submission contest where listeners were encouraged to record their own music videos of themselves lip synching to the song, generating thousands of submissions for a chance to win tickets to the private event.

Currently in the wake of this success, “Tres Las” has recently been added to Poland’s first installment of the well known US mix CD NOW That’s What I Call Music Vol. 1 keeping company with such US Pop icons as Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, Ke$ha, to name a few. As well as being charted on Eska Rock’s top 100 songs of 2010, “Tres Las” #3, and “Burn It Down” at #36.  While achieving mass appeal overseas as many contemporary rock acts such as The White Stripes & Kings of Leon have done before achieving national recognition stateside, Oedipus is ready to take the US by storm in 2011
