Alex Winston Premieres “Choice Notes” Single

Category: Blog · 0

mp3: Download “Choice Notes”

While it’s a great accomplishment to play a single instrument well, it’s a truly rare gift to play many perfectly. With The Basement Covers EP, singer Alex Winston proves she is one of the exceptional few. Classically trained in opera and bred on musical Americana, the beautiful Detroit- native remarkably played each instrument—guitar, piano, drums—on the four-song EP which she recorded in her actual home basement.

Winston’s truly unique and refreshing sound navigates influential pillars as diverse as Feist, The Arcade Fire, Lykke Li and Sheryl Crow.  As the name suggests, the debut offering from Alex consists of five covers of tracks from various artists; Mumford & Sons, Teddy Bears, The Rolling Stones, Jack Penate and Francis and the Lights. She has just finished putting the finishing touches on her debut, Choice Notes, with New York’s hottest new producer whizz kids – The Knocks. This taster of Alex’s incredible talent is now available for free download and acts as a precursor to her debut release of Choice Notes, released on Limited Edition 7” vinyl through HeavyRoc Music on July 27th.

BIO:

The band influences are as eclectic as its members. As children motown
and gospel played freely in the household. As they grew older so did
their taste in music. You can find the band listening to anything from
Lil Wayne to Ani Difranco, Rascal Flats to Bjork or Marvin Gaye to John
Mayer. The point is there is something for everyone when Tyet is
playing!

With soulful riffs and powerful vocals TYET moves everyone their
music comes in contact with. The band’s combined resume includes
international performances, professional theater productions, festivals,
bars, nightclubs and community events. Playing to crowds that have
ranged in size from 5 to 10,000, TYET performs with a natural connection
to their audiences. The band motto is “Uplifting the spirits of those
who need it and bringing the party to those who want it”, and they
deliver every time. Having shared the bill with the likes of George
Clinton, The Wailers, and the Jazz Mandolin Project, it comes as no
surprise that they deliver a great show. Seeing TYET live is the best
way to experience them. Their set list is full of old soulful covers as
well as current radio hits. Their original music not only reflects their
soulful roots but their eclectic exposure to music.

While they capture some of this on their demo ”The TYET
Experiment” we can not wait to hear the new studio release, which they
are currently working on. This group is headed for great accomplishments
in the music industry and it won’t be long before we see their name in
lights. For more information and the complete TYET story please visit
our website at www.TYET.biz .

Les Savy Fav Album Leaked, Responds with A Paypal Donation Page

Category: Blog, Free Music, New Releases, News · 0

Les Savy Fav’s new single, Let’s Get Out of Here, is available as a free download. Their new release, Root For Ruin, is available August 3rd on Frenchkiss Records. It was originally scheduled for a Sept 14 release but the album was leaked. Les Savy Fav responded by setting up a Paypal account to accept guilt-free donations for the album. They also promise that fans who pay extra will be “forgiven for sex sins and stuff AND we’ll tell Jesus to send you cookies.”  Sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

Watch for them on tour this fall.

Tracklisting :

01 “Appetites”
02 “Dirty Knails”
03 “Sleepless in Silverlake”
04 “Let”s Get Out of Here”
05 “Lips n” Stuff”
06 “Poltergeist”
07 “High and Unhinged”
08 “Excess Engergies”
09 “Dear Crutches”
10 “Calm Down”
11 “Clear Spirits”

Since their emergence from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1996, Les Savy Fav have been building a passionate following among musicians, fans, and critics the old fashioned way: by earning it.  In a world where technologies speed new music to listeners and enable young bands instant access to limitless audience, Les Savy Fav is among an increasingly rare breed of band who built their audience city by city and fan by fan. The approach has yielded something even more rare: a fully seasoned band at the peak of their skill that has not been blown out by hype and overexposure. The band’s 2007 release, Let’s Stay Friends, was their first to achieve substantial press response and found it’s place in many lists of top albums for the year.  With their new release, Root For Ruin, Les Savy Fav seems poised for the kind of widespread acclaim many have felt they have long deserved.

The new album is called Root For Ruin for several reasons. Here’s one: it sifts through 15 years of musical experience to arrive at a diamond-edged sound that’s as upfront and direct as the quintet’s legendary live shows. That goes for everything from the gut-punching percussion and drunken punk subtleties of “Clear Spirits” to the moonlit melodies and restless, groove of “Sleepless in Silverlake”. “Poltergeist”, cut in one take at the band’s rehearsal space, features a downward spiral vibe that’s both delirious and delightful.  Root For Ruin keeps you on your toes through 11 tracks.

The band approached their previous release Let’s Stay Friends, after over ten years working together, the way a married couple looking to spice things up might. Like the hosts of a wild swingers party, they opened their arms to embrace new players from such indie rock institutions as the Fiery Furnaces, Broken Social Scene, Enon and Modest Mouse to join them. They even went so far as to invite fans to sing on their tracks over the phone. Root For Ruin finds frontman Tim Harrington, bassist Syd Butler, drummer Harrison Haynes, and guitarists Seth Jabour and Andrew Reuland enjoying a less “open” relationship. The album features only the five Favs. “With our last album, we wanted to cavort around the world and try some freaky stuff.” says Harrington. “With this one(Root For Ruin), it turns out we enjoy making love with one another more than with a group of strangers” adds Jabour.

Weird sex metaphors aside, the tightness of the band is undeniable on Root For Ruin. For some it will signal a return to the rawer energy evidenced on their early recordings. It’s clear by the tracks on the album that the guys are enjoying their own legacy.  Many songs carry the torch for some of the band’s first influences.  Still, it’s not nostalgic.  Root For Ruin is not stylistic pose or aesthetic conceit- it’s the real deal. Les Savy Fav’s commitment to it’s work and fans might explain why one of Brooklyn’s ballsiest bands has maintained such a cult following for more than a decade. With Root For Ruin, they’ve succeeded in distilling their interests and experiences into an album which will continue to influence the independent music scene they’ve helped build while broadening their sound towards a new world of fans.

American Heartbreak – Rotten Apple music video

Category: Blog · 0

american-heartbreak.jpg

For nearly a decade, American Heartbreak have been one of rocks underground heroes, but with the release of their eponymous second full-length album, they aim to leave the underground behind and follow in the footsteps of their arena rock idols. The San Francisco-based quintet co-founded by Billy Rowe, onetime guitarist for Jetboy (a band All Music Guide calls one of the best-kept secrets of 80s glam metal) blend a punk-influenced pop-metal aesthetic with the melodic allure and accessible hooks of classic pop radio. If the New Wave Of Classic Rock is in session, American Heartbreak is at the head of the class. Along with vocalist Lance Boone and former Exodus bassist Michael Butler (currently the host of the highly successful weekly Rock and Roll Geek Show Podcast), Rowe first introduced American Heartbreak to rock fans via the 1997 EP What You Deserve, initially released on Perris Records. After several tribute album contributions and lineup changes, their first full-length, Postcards From Hell, surfaced three years later on hometown indie Coldfront Records. The album recalled the unpretentious fun of supercharged Sunset Strip rock while reinterpreting the buzz-saw melodies of arena rock legends such as Kiss and Cheap Trick for a post-alternative rock age. Following a 2001 split-CD with The Libertines, the group added rhythm guitarist Casey Crenshaw prior to a European tour, during which they recorded a live set that became the foundation of their next release. 2003s You Will Not Be Getting Paid (Perris Records) featured five live songs, five acoustic tracks (including Starz and Cheap Trick covers) and six remixed songs from the What You Deserve EP. After the European releases of You Will Not Be Getting Paid and Postcards From Hell in 2004 (People Like You Records), the group returned to the continent for another tour in early 2005. Back on the home front, they toured the West Coast with Backyard Babies, The Chelsea Smiles and Crash Kelly that summer. (The group has also toured and/or gigged with The New York Dolls, The Donnas, Queens of the Stone Age, Buckcherry, Warrant, Cinderella, The Scorpions, Dio, Sebastian Bach, L.A. Guns, Starz and Tsar, among others.) By years end, the band completed its second full-length with co-producer Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Space Twins [Weezer guitarist Brian Bells side project], Tyler Hilton). The result: 13 tracks of timeless rock n roll. It proves that while trend-seekers may be fawning over the latest batch of rock saviors as if the genre was invented only yesterday, American Heartbreak is the real deal a band impervious to fads and driven purely by the desire to play loud, catchy rock.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Announced as Aerosmith Support Act

Category: News, On Tour · 1

Congratulations to Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. They got the support slot on the Western Canadian dates of the current Aerosmith Cocked and Loaded Tour.

I missed Aerosmith this time around. Tickets were out of my price range and the set lists on the current tour have too many of their crappy hits like Living on The Edge and What it takes.
Here is the set list for the Oakland show that I missed. (Lord of the Thighs is the only tune I would have actually gotten excited about.)

Rats In The Cellar
Monkey On My Back
Love In An Elevator
Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)
Eat The Rich
Pink
Livin’ On The Edge
What It Takes
Janie’s Got A Gun
Last Child
Cryin’
Lord Of The Thighs
Stop Messin’ Around
I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing
Sweet Emotion
Baby Please Don’t Go
Draw The Line
