Katrina And The Waves – Walking On Sunshine music video

Katrina and The Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine” Turns 25

katw.jpg

Until 1985, every major label in the world rejected “Walking on Sunshine.” Katrina and The Waves, helmed by “gentle genius” and lead songwriter, Kimberley Rew, were a relatively unknown group outside of elite tastemaker circles; forming after Rew split off from Robyn Hitchcock and critical favorites, The Soft Boys. When major labels still did such things, Capitol Records took a chance and signed KATW, releasing “Walking on Sunshine” to instant pop success, earning top 10 positions globally. US radio has since broadcast “WOS” 2,000,000 times, propelling it to the #1 played track in the summer of 2008, 23 years after release.

Yet, before becoming a global sensation, Kimberley Rew recorded some of the most lasting and finely-crafted pop songs of his career. These songs and albums have gone largely unrecognized and unheard, until now. Tummy Touch Records will reissue four seminal Kimberley Rew records this spring (dates below), giving them the full distribution and accolades they deserve.

Tastemaker website Brooklyn Vegan will commemorate these reissues with a Kimberley Rew covers EP featuring hand-selected artists from an arsenal of immensely talented friends. Brooklyn Vegan writer Bill Pearis states, “Kimberley Rew is one of the ’80s great, unheralded pop songwriters. Sure, ‘Walking on Sunshine’ was a huge joyous smash, but the album it’s from has nine more songs just as good, some (‘Going Down to Liverpool’) maybe even better. It’s all hits.”

QUOTES:

“Kimberley Rew is where pop and archaeology meet: the six-string guardian of old England, rocking the neolithic pathways just as the glaciers did before him. I can’t remember a time before Kimberley, and I dread a world without him. Monster!”

-Robyn Hitchcock

“I remember the very first time I heard one of Kimberley’s great songs…’That’s Just the Woman In Me’.   For more than 10 years I couldn’t get the song out of my mind, and I finally had the chance to record it a few years ago. Now, that’s what I call a memorable songwriter!”
- Celine Dion

“I have been a fan of Kimberley Rew’s songwriting for 25 years, and have been dumbfounded by his guitar playing every time I see him play”
- Peter Buck, REM

“I have great memories of touring Europe in the 80’s with Kimberley. It was wonderful to see the love of her audience and how the band ignited them.  I remember how powerful “Walking on Sunshine” was at that time and how it has remained a classic till this day.”

-Mick Fleetwood

“Kimberley Rew is a gentle genius and his songs are a revelation. Because he is and they are.”
-Vicki Peterson, The Bangles

“The early morning (after the long night) that we finished “Walking On Sunshine” was one of the greatest experiences of my professional career. I’ll always remember doing the final edits on the 2 track, and all of us knowing we had something that was really special.  Congratulations to Kimberley and the band on the song’s anniversary.  It’s a classic.”
-Scott Litt, record producer (REM, Nirvana, Incubus)

“When the Soft Boys split up, Kimberley was bursting with new songs, and ready to get into the studio. It was amazing how many great pop tracks he had written while being in the Soft Boys. We went into The Church studios in London with the band and laid down and mixed about 10 tracks in 2 days. All of them were great. Brown Eyed Son, came out as a single, but much as the Soft Boys were “a band out of time”, in that Underwater Moonlight came out in the heat of the London punk scene, radio and press were focused on other things, and the single went largely un-noticed. Kimberley was undeterred, and with endless energy from Alex, Katrina, and Vince behind him, the band powered on, continued writing, gigging, and refining their art, and finally broke through with the massive worldwide hit “Walking On Sunshine”.
- Richard Bishop (manager of Henry Rollins & The Crystal Method – he released the first Kimberley Rew solo records back in 1981.)

“If you have not had a chance to check out the correctness known as
Farrad, then take a peek…he is definitely one to watch and if you don’t
find yourself busting a move while listening to this you must have a
giant stick shoved sideways up you’re a**. TRUST.” (Walt Cessna,
contributor to BlackBook & A Shaded View On Fashion)

Farrad
debuted tracks off his debut album, The Time Is Now at Santos Party
House in NYC in 2009 and it’s been an upward trajectory ever since. The
project is receiving such great response that Bunim/Murray Productions
licensed his entire album for shows including: MTV’s Real World, Road
Rules, Extreme Challenge & The Stylist; E!’s Keeping Up With The
Kardashians & Khloe and Kourt Go To Miami; and Bad Girls Club on
Oxygen.

Farrad’s powerful first single “Pick Your Face Up Off The Floor”
inspired world-class talent to contribute to the accompanying video:
Director Greg Haggart and Ann Gilbertson (producer of music videos and
concert footage for acts such as Rolling Stones, Michael & Janet
Jackson, David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails), partnered with Farrad to
realize a post-apocalyptic vision of man vs. machine. Hot designer
SoHung Tong (creator of unique looks for Beyonce and Fergie) customized
a must-see piece, and motor-cross world record breaker, Shane San
Miguel, lent his skills as the musical short’s daredevil nemesis.

Farrad appeared on the 2008 NewNowNext Awards on Logo with his
fellow Dazzle Dancers, and he performed with Cazwell opening for Lady
Gaga at the Highland Ballroom. In the last year he has also rocked
audiences at the most recent New York City Fashion Week, Joe’s Pub, the
2009 Pridefest Stage on the Hudson, The Endup in San Francisco, along
with Vauxhall’s Club Fire and the famed Madame JoJo’s in London.

His influences include Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson,
Mick Jagger and contemporary artists such as Beyonce, Prince, and Andre
3000. Farrad commands a stage with precise choreography, unbridled
passion, boundless energy and the singular focus to give the crowd more
than they bargained for – infusing every song with power, theatrics,
and ridiculously catchy hooks.

A regular in the downtown New York City performance scene, he has
played all over North America, Europe and Australia, and is excited to
take his entire album and first single, “Pick Your Face Up Off The
Floor” to the dance floor and into the mainstream.

Get ready for clever, heavy-hitting, urban-crossover jams that won’t leave you sitting for long.

Raw emotion, precise delivery, killer hooks…and a whole lotta soul.

Justine Bennett Live Acoustic on Mevio Underground

Singer songstress Justine Bennett grew up amongst artists and hippies in the remote mountains of British Columbia, listening to the folk songbirds of her piano teaching mothers generation. As a late teen, she packed her bags and moved to San Francisco. After years of playing on the streets where she lived, Justine recorded her debut album “Invisible”, which synched every song to television and afforded her performances at legendary venues such as the Fillmore in SF and the Troubadour in LA.

Her most recent work, “Heavy Feeling” is a mystical folk rock album, capturing her North Country influences and hauntingly unique vocal timbre. There’s something vintage in her angelic alto voice, that recalls other singing sirens, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks and Natalie Merchant, from rocks golden ages.

Producer Chris Seefried (Rosanne Cash, Low Stars) along with musicians David Immergluck (Counting Crows, John Hiatt) and Don Heffington (Emylou Harris, Ricky Lee Jones) have adorned this record with loose instrumental embellishments, creating songs that feel lived in and music that is timeless.

Tommy Lee / Methods of Mayhem A Public Disservice Announcement Release Date

Category: News · 0

METHODS OF MAYHEM’S NEW ALBUM TITLE/RELEASE DATE REVEALED: “A PUBLIC DISSERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT”
DUE OUT SEPTEMBER 21ST

AMAZON

Tommy Lee has rocked every continent multiple times, sold millions of records with Motley Crue and on his own, done everything a musician dreams of doing, except he’s never made a record with the entire world.  The new Methods Of Mayhem album, now entitled A PUBLIC DISSERVICEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT, is set for release on September 21st and features Tommy Lee collaborating with the world.  Lee commented, “When I founded Methods in 1999, the whole purpose of the band was to be all over the place.  In keeping with that, this Methods isn’t anything like the last one. There’s no hip hop and there’s no roster of guest stars. This time, it’s me, my band, and the world.”  Please see below for the track listing for A PUBLIC DISSERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.

Tommy Lee and his team, including producer Scott Humphrey, singer-guitarist J3 and others, wrote and recorded the songs for the new album, then made the core components of each  available for download on www.thepublicrecord.com to anyone who wished to add their playing or otherwise re-interpret the music however they saw fit. Lee listened to every single submission that was uploaded, chose the best, and integrated the actual audio tracks into the album’s final cuts.  Every single musician whose part was used is credited and thanked on the album.

The song files were made available on The Public Record on October 5th, 2009. By the end of the submission period in February, 2010, the page was viewed over 1 million times and over 10,000 submissions were uploaded.  What came back once the public got its hands on the raw ingredients was truly all over the map – just as Tommy Lee had hoped.  The diverse submissions included techno tracks sent in from Japan, hand drum rhythms from India and searing guitar solos from as close to home as San Diego.

Methods of Mayhem self-titled debut was released in 1999 and was certified RIAA Gold.  The album featured Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock and Fred Durst among others.  Methods Of Mayhem’s set was a featured highlight of 2000′s Ozzfest.

A PUBLIC DISSERVICE ANNOUNCMENT track listing:

1.    Drunk Uncle Pete
