Mike Watt & His Missingmen, Portland, OR 05/21/09

Category: Blog, On Tour · 0

Long time fans of Mike Watt know him as an uber road dog. Often performing more shows in a tour than there are days. On this latest tour he took it easy and only did 32 shows in 37 days. 3 of those days off were spend recording his upcoming album to be released later this year.
With all that stage time you’d figure Watt and his Missingmen would have displayed serious signs of wear and tear by the time they reached Portland (show #29 for those keeping count), but you’d be wrong. This night the band was on fire. Blazing through their 45 minute set. Songs began before the last note of  the previous song had a chance to fade.
Fans of Watt’s solo releases might have been taken aback, by the absence of any of his spacey / jammy tunes. In fact, other than “Big Bang Theory” (an outtake from “Ball Hog or Tug Boat”) and a handful of Minutemen gems, the set was all covers. It makes one wonder what this upcoming album has in store for us fans.
Recently, Watt was quoted as saying that the Missingmen are the closest he has come to playing with his original band the Minutemen. Drummer Raul Morales & guitarist Tom Watson, do a great job following the trail started by Boon & Hurley, but they add layers to the sound that is unique and all their own. When they rip through Roky Erickson’s “Sweet Honey Pie” or ride the groove of “Funhouse”, you realize that they aren’t just playing supporting roles in the Mike Watt show. They are lead actors. Rather than just play the notes as heard from the original artists, they deconstruct the songs to their core and rebuild them into new images. However, always mindful that the song is the priority and stretching out to jam only to fill in the pockets where needed. no noodling in this tasty dish.
The three also appear to have bonded in a playfulness that I don’t recall having seen on any of Watt’s past solo outings. Like Watson and Watt doing synchronized pirouettes while playing “Black Sheep”. It’s easy to assume that at 51 Watt is having the time of his life on stage.

Jay Bennet Dead at 45

Jay Bennet Dead at 45

Jim Derogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times has confirmed that former WILCO member Jay Bennett was found dead early Sunday morning. This is just three weeks after Bennett filed a lawsuit against WILCO leader Jeff Tweedy for breach of contract and unpaid artist’s royalties, stemming in part from his role in the documentary “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.” The movie is known to fans as documenting Bennett’s final days with, and ultimate dismissel from the band. His contributions during his seven year tenyear with the band are seen as helping the band to achive a broader fan base.

A MESSAGE FROM ANDREW W.K.:

“It gives me great pleasure to announce my partnership with Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada’s The Evaporators, as we release a new split 7″ EP! It’s called A Wild Pear, and features artwork by American cartoonist, Mitch Clem! I’m honored to be part of the this special musical moment. I’ve been a fan of Nardwuar since I first saw him on bootleg VHS copies of his Cable Access TV shows. Then I found out about The Evaporators, and I was even more blown away. I’ve recorded my own cover versions of two classic Canadian punk tunes: The Leather Uppers– “Don’t Sell Hot Dogs Tonight”, and Subhumans– “Oh Canaduh”. I love both of these songs and had an amazing time recording them. I’ve been a strong fan of The Leather Uppers since I first heard about their music from my friend Jim Magas, almost 14 years ago. Plus on the 7″ you’re holding now, you can also get your own dose of The Evaporators, with these two songs: an original “The Bombs in My Pants” and also a cover “Oh Non” ( originally by Montreal 1960′s group Les Hou-Lops).

I consider this release to be the result of a magical circle, one that started for me back in high school, while living in southeast Michigan. Having the opportunity to meet Nardwuar was a dream come true and the first time the circle connected. Getting to make this record with him is the circle coming together another time, and I’m very grateful. Out of respect for dreams coming true, I dedicate my contributions on this 7″ to Canada, Nardwuar, and my wife, Cherie Lily.” – Andrew W.K.

The Evaporators
1. The Bombs in My Pants! (1:33)
2. Oh Non (2:32)

TOMMY Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary

TOMMY Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary
with the worldwide digital release of the performance by the
LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
AND CHAMBRE CHOIR WITH GUEST SOLOISTS

image001

The deaf, dumb and blind boy is 40 years old this summer! And to commemorate this unforgettable event, Ode Records presents the London Symphony Orchestra joined by The Who and other distinguished guests performing this classic album.

Considered the first album to be recognized as a “Rock opera,” Tommy is celebrating its 40th with this all-star production featuring; Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Rod Stewart, John Entwistle, Merry Clayton, Steve Winwood, Richie Havens, Richard Harris, Ringo Starr, Maggie Bell, Graham Bell and Sandy Denny.

Tommy was originally released in 1969 as the first concept album in the history of rock & roll and went straight to #2 in the UK charts. In 1972 entrepreneur Lou Reizner presented the concert version of Tommy backed up by The London Symphony Orchestra and Chambre Choir with guest appearances. The piece landed Pete Townshend’s support because he saw it as the realization of what he had visualized when he wrote the original piece, with multiple instruments in mind.

This release of Tommy was performed by a 100-piece orchestra and was one of the more elaborately conceived albums of its era. It became a gold record, selling in excess of 500,000 units. Tommy hits all digital stores next week, but is available one week early on iTunes, so grab it now!
